Still looking for a solution to my perl 5.6 dilemma I tried running slimserver using the locale en_US.UTF-8. 
But this crashes the server with the following message:

Undefined subroutine &Encode::_utf8_on called at /home/.../Slim/Utils/Misc.pm line 523.

Michael - I just checked in a fix as subversion change 2383.

There are 536 bugs in the database with targets of '---' that were fixed prior to new year 2006.  I am setting them to targets of 6.2.1 to keep them from showing up in my queries.
