Bugzilla – Bug 9713
WMA files cannot FWD / RWD
Last modified: 2009-10-05 14:32:12 UTC
Holding down forward or rewind does not skip playback within a WMA song. All I can do is skip whole tracks. Using latest release. Bug #571 initially concerned WMA files but was changed - somebody still needs this functionality due to the format of their music files.
Alan, can you comment and target appropriatly
This would require a WMA format handler for SC. This would be difficult to write as only unofficial documentation is available for the format that is in actual use. Microsoft have published documentation for a newer format that nobody uses (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=14853). The older (1.0 format: http://avifile.sourceforge.net/asf-1.0.htm) has been reverse engineered. It is claimed that the container format (as opposed to the codec format), Advanced Systems Format (ASF), is covered by patents. ASF does not appear to be included in Microsoft's list of Open Protocols (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/cc216513.aspx). It is further claimed (see avifile link) that the license available with the specification is incompatible with OSS licences and prohibits the distribution of source code; my own reading of the licence included in the (new) ASF specification would confirm this (End User License Agreement, clause 2(f)). Given all the above, I cannot see any work proceeding on this at this time.
We'll have to wait until we can get some help from Microsoft on this one.

How about trying the Microsoft suggested approach? As far as I can see, this would be the place to go for additional info/help from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/licensing/Licensing_Consumer_Devices_WMComp.aspx (sorry if the URL is wrapped). BR, Claus
WMA seeking will be in 7.4.
Fixed in change 26040. (7.4 noweb-sqlite branch)
Just to help a noob like me: Currently 7.4 is at build 26452, and no mention in the change list of this being fixed. Is it just an ommission in the change list or something else?
I forgot to add it to the changelog, just did that. It is not in the main 7.4 builds though, and that's why you aren't seeing it yet.
Cheers Andy, Thank you for the explanation - will wait for it to be included (this and the WOL that arrived somewhere around 6.2.1 (really can't remember) are the only two functions that I missed with my SB2, SB3, SBR and Transporter setup). Will buy a Boom to celebrate once it is there :-)
