Description Robert 2008-09-22 22:01:47 UTC
i would like to report a bug that i found while using SC.

if you use the remote of the duet to select genres, you can only scroll to a certain point and then it stops responding.

i am not sure if there is a limit on the amount of genres that is recognized, but i believe that we have about 400 different genres.

it is possible to scroll through the first few letters of the alphabet of them and then the controller just refuses to scroll through any more.

Do you know if there is a limit on this? If so, what is the limit?

If it is not a known issue, can this be put up for consideration to be fixed in a new release of SqueezeCenter?

There's no limit built in. Could you please upload the server.log file? (Settings/Status)

What exact version of SC are you running? Is SC running on the ReadyNAS or your XP machine?

Robert said:

"At current I am running the 7.2 client on the ReadyNAS that came
preinstalled with the new 4.1.3 firmware for the NAS.

I have had this issue with previous releases as well."

Would you mind giving our 7.2.1 release a try? Not only is the ReadyNAS 7.2 build stripped down in some regards, but we've put considerable effort in optimizing performance in 7.2.1 too.

Andy and Ben seem to know what this bug is about. It apparently has to do with the number of genres. Although there is no upper limit, some specific number of Genres have problems.

Could you try adding one new genre and see if the problem goes away? :)

That other bug is bug 7829

Robert, just to clarify, our hunch is that you have *exactly* 400 genres (or any multiple of 200). If you can add 1 genre to your SC library and report back whether the issue still exists in that condition, that would be great information in pinpointing the cause of the issue.

hello guys, thanks for your input, but i am not quite sure it has anything to do with a specific number of genres...

we had somewhere in the high 400's a few days ago... then went through and fixed some tagging and got rid of about 60 or so genres.

i now have 402 left and it still does the same.

I have the same problem there with 258 genres in "Random Mix -> Choose Genres", and the problem is around since I have the duet, so the number of genres might have changed since, but the problem remains there.

It seems like the controller displays all the genre, but it just stops scrolling in the middle somewhere at letter 'P' (maybe near third/fourth quarter of the list). As I can see one line before the end of the screen, I see that the command "select all" and "select none" seems to apply to the whole list (it at least select and deselect the item after the one on which I'm blocked).

If I try to go in reverse from the beginning of the list, the screen became empty (correct display with title, scrollbar, background image and status bar, but just with no item displayed) and I can not scroll back or forth, I just can use "back button" and select "choose genres" again.

This is rather annoying for random mix users who like using large number of genre to drive random behavior...

Robin/Robert - are you talking about the same issue here? Browse music by genres or browse genres within the RandomPlay menu?

As you can see, I'm talking about the "RandomPlay" menu. As Robert was talking about "selecting genre", I thought he was talking about the same bug/menu.

If Robert bug is about "Browse by Genres", I would better open another report.

i am talking about this scenario: (i hope i get it right from memory, i am sitting at work right now)

music library:
random mix:
by genre:

then you cannot scroll fully through the genres

So it seems that I guessed right, the bug Robert meets is the same as I do...
Comment 11 Michael Herger 2008-10-14 05:24:09 UTC
Ben - the problem here is that SP is requesting the first 200 items, but the query is returning all of them, no matter how large the list.
Comment 12 Michael Herger 2008-10-14 05:32:53 UTC
change 23550 - add slicing to the genre list query in RandomPlay
Comment 13 Ross Levine 2008-11-20 15:51:40 UTC
Looks good with 7.3 - 23981

This bug has been fixed in the 7.3.0 release version of SqueezeCenter!

Please download the new version from http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html if you haven't already.

If you are still experiencing this problem, feel free to reopen the bug with your new comments and we'll have another look.
