Description Dan Evans 2008-09-19 17:21:59 UTC
(support ticket# 080818-002276)

Report from a customer trying to connect his SB Duet to a Netgear WPN824 router... He experienced connection problems and slowness. He solved it on his own by disabling the "Advanced 108Mbps" feature.

While there is a workaround here (provided this is reproducible) I'm not sure if this is something we necessarily should work with or not. Thus-- a bug.
Comment 1 James Richardson 2008-09-20 09:23:09 UTC
Ross: do we have this router to verify the issue with?
Comment 2 Ross Levine 2008-09-22 11:29:43 UTC
This is already documented here:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/RouterStatus#Netgear
Comment 3 Ross Levine 2009-02-11 13:34:59 UTC
Right now ticket number 090205-003154 marks the second documented case of a Duet related issue with this router, we need to acquire one for testing. James can you help me out?
Comment 4 Dan Evans 2009-02-12 10:46:21 UTC
I have an WPN824 I am not using. I'll bring it in.

Controller log

Thanks Dan for bringing in the WPN824. r3993 Controller fails to connect to this router with or without "Advanced 108Mbps Features" enabled, using WPA2.
Comment 6 Ross Levine 2009-02-12 13:06:29 UTC
Controller fails to connect with WEP, or no encryption at all. Note this is a WPN824v1, with firmware V2.0.120_1.0.15. Support ticket 090205-003154 is a WPN824v3, there is only one firmware available for this particular router so that is likely what he has, 1.0.7.
Comment 7 Mark Kristel 2009-02-23 01:13:40 UTC
I have a WPN824 HW Version V2H1 SW Version V2.0.20_1.2.17, configuration: enabled the "Advanced 108Mbps" with WEP-128 bits and use it with the following devices:
- Wireless: Squeezebox boom Firware: 43
- Wireless: Transporter Firmware: 73
- Wireless: Controller: Software Version 7.3 r3993
- Wired: ReadyNAS Duo: SqueezeCenter Version 7.3.2 - 24695
- Wireless/Wired: other non-related slimdevices
All devices work fine, with the exception of the Controller. This one looses the connection freqently and while loading the artwork, it seems to not get all of them (possibly because of connection time-outs while receiving the artwork?). When it is connected I can use it to control my devices allright, however it a huge annoyance that the connection is lost so frequently and that not all of the artwork is displayed.
A fix would be hugely apreciated.
Comment 8 Ross Levine 2009-02-25 12:45:50 UTC
Changing priority to P2; support sees this frequently enough (tier 2 at least 3 times per month) and the problems are bad. Controller can't connect directly to SN. I'm investigating with a WPN824v1 now and I'm seeing inconsistent connection issues from setup. I'm also seeing several flaws with this router, upon factory resetting it the initial settings are not always the same. I suspect this router, at least the V1, is sub par.

Ticket 081201-000664

Customer is having the same issue.

Thanks,

LaRon, which issue is that? Connecting to SN? Controller losing network connection? Artwork not loading?
Comment 11 Walker LaRon 2009-02-25 17:10:08 UTC
Hey Ross,

Sorry, I should have been more clearer. He is having the issue where the SB Controller Randomly looses connection, per comment #7

Thanks,

LaRon

jive log SN setup failure

About 1 in 3 times I attempt to setup Duet connecting to a WPN824 directly to Squeeze Network it fails, and when I Try Again it won't allow me to select my Receiver, it bumps. The Controller seems to connect to the network, after rebooting it the icon is white, but Receiver stays blinking red.
Comment 13 Marc Auslander 2009-02-26 17:04:24 UTC
FWIW, I have an 824V3 and it's only really reliable with 108 and range extender both turned off. In that mode, I'm actually pretty happy with it. Its been too long to accurately report the issues, but the were related to disconnects and failures to reconnect, both of my controller and I think my SB3 as well.
Comment 14 Mark Kristel 2009-02-27 02:10:27 UTC
I benefit from the 108Mbps and range extending functions for other devices (i.e. non slimdevices). Turning them off is not desirable. Also note that both the transporter and squeezebox boom don't suffer any connection problems using this router.

Perhaps the netgear WPN824 itself has an issue? Or it uses some non-standard extentions that are causing the issue. Would it be possible to involve netgear in resolving the issue?

In my opinion they would benefit from a solution as well, reputation wise that is. Squeezecenter comes pre-installed on the Netgear ReadyNAS Duo, which suggest to me they already have chosen to associate themselves or suggest some form of parnership with Logitech slimdevices. Routers from from a diffierent netgear division, but to me as a client, I don't care? It would be bad if I were to decide to buy another router.
Comment 15 Andrew Rose 2009-03-04 05:11:39 UTC
On the customer side I did the following:

1. Disabled "Advanced 108Mbps" and it did not work.

2. Updated Firmware to latest version and it did not work.

3. Reverted to Factory settings on latest firmware and it did not work.

4. Turned off all encryption and it still did not work.

5. Replaced it with a DLINK DIR-655 Router and it seems to work as it should.

While not the suggestion you want to give customers this does confirm that the Duet works fine with a different router.

wpa_cli output

I can reproduce this intermittently. Problem either trying to reach Receiver or shortly after, I don't quite understand.
Comment 17 Marc Auslander 2009-03-08 07:22:24 UTC
An outsiders observation -

The difficulty with diagnosing this stuff cries out for better logging if that is at all possible.

(And my 824, running B only with all extras turned off, is rock solid).
Comment 18 Richard Titmuss 2009-06-09 12:10:18 UTC
Ross is this still a problem with the latest build?
Comment 19 Ross Levine 2009-06-22 16:14:03 UTC
Works consistently 7.4 5580.
