A known source of user pain during setup is the inability to locate the Squeezebox device PIN when trying to add a player to squeezenetwork.com. A good short-term solution is to provide a linked pop-up information panel next to the "PIN" text area when presented to the user.

There are two ways to find your PIN currently on a squeezebox, depending on whether or not you've previously registered the PIN on squeezenetwork.com. One case probably applies here over 90 percent of the time, but both should be mentioned.

Solution: in both places where the user is asked to enter a PIN (both the "add player" form in the top-right of the logged-in home page, and in the first page of the signup wizard), add a link to the RIGHT of the "PIN" text area that reads "Where do I find my PIN?"

- the link should open a new window (small, fixed-size pop-up browser window) with the following text:

Where do I find my PIN? <--- larger font/header
---
- Make sure your Squeezebox is connected to your home network.
(See your user guide and/or quick start guide if needed.)
- From your Squeezebox's main menu, scroll down and select "SqueezeNetwork.") Your Squeezebox should automatically connect to SqueezeNetwork.
- If your Squeezebox has NEVER been registered on squeezenetwork.com, your PIN should display automatically.
- If your Squeezebox HAS been previously registered on squeezenetwork.com, scroll down and select "Settings," then scroll down again and select "Player PIN."

Feel free to ping me if wires/mocks are needed, and/or existing styles are not available for a pop-up window.

Different player types need different instructions (SB3 with display vs. Receiver). Do you want this to be included in the current web page, or is this going to be done with the new skin?

The menu path is the same regardless of the player type, right? I've never used the transporter but I'm pretty sure there are two basic cases (either the device's PIN has been previously registered or it hasnt) regardless of the product. Sure, the way you navigate those menus might be different depending on what kind of remote / dial / buttons you're using, but isn't the path the same? Correct me if I'm wrong.

And yeah, I was hoping to get this in with the current skin - it's one of the nastiest signup issues in the whole process (it doesn't have to look super-sexy; we can define the styles etc. for pop-up windows, if needed, with the new skin)

As the Receiver doesn't have a display you can't see the PIN there ;-). Thus we'll have to describe two ways to get it: one on the player's display (where available), one on the Controller.

Right, but isn't the menu structure the same onthe controller (even though the screen is different)? That was my point. Maybe I need to go back and take a look...

(As a side note, the fact that the process of locating a simple PIN is so convoluted is indeed telling, no?)
