Description Weldon Matt 2008-09-18 13:32:09 UTC
(I believe this bug belongs in the SqueezeCenter category; correct me if I'm wrong)

Currently, the default display for track names in Squeezebox players / Squeezecenter is "DISC-TRACKNUM. TITLE."

The default should be changed instead to simply "title."

Basic reasons:
- "DISC-TRACKNUM" is really only helpful in the context of playing back an album, assuming those tracks are in correct order. This display breaks down if playing a playlist, using shufffle mode, etc.
- "DISC-TRACKNUM" assumes correct track data existing in all (or most) ID3 tags in a user's library. This won't be the case for most casual users, who may have acquired files from a mishmash of CD rips, itunes/Amazon etc purchases, P2P downloads, etc. There are too many cases where the tag data will be unreliable for this to be the default.
- the users who would benefit the most from the tracknum display are likely power users (they've taken the time to properly tag their library and commonly listen to full albums), who can make the change in the player preferences tab in SC if needed.
- screen real estate is at a premium, and already it's tough to get full track names to fit onscreen, esp. on the boom. Removing tracknum allows for a less cluttered display.

The engineering team, who like lots of data, seem to object to this. Is the benefit basically a cleaner UI?

Assigning to Dean for comments.

I will repeat... unless you're playing an album and all the files are in proper sequence and properly tagged, the track number data is not useful to most first-time users. iTunes and most other popular media players default to NOT include the album track number name when possible, and for good reason.

We're only talking about changing a default here. Anyone can go in and manually change the display.

And yes, the result is a (much much) cleaner UI. Especially on the Boom, which has a very small screen.

I agree, the default should be changed for new users.

Michael: Can you do the honors?
Comment 4 Michael Herger 2008-11-06 01:08:56 UTC
change 23829 - default to short TITLE only title format on all player and web UIs. It was already Boom's default.

Verified to be changed in 7.3 - 23961

This bug has been fixed in the 7.3.0 release version of SqueezeCenter!

Please download the new version from http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html if you haven't already.

If you are still experiencing this problem, feel free to reopen the bug with your new comments and we'll have another look.
