Bugzilla – Bug 9530
Slimserver using iTunes folder despite box being unchecked in settings
Last modified: 2008-09-18 09:27:21 UTC
Hello, This is a complaint (arguably a bug) that drove me nuts until I figured out what was going on. I have my whole library ripped in WMA format for use by SqueezeCenter and my Squeezebox 3 and Squeezebox boom. I also have several Apple devices that use iTunes (iPod, etc) and as a result I must maintain a separate folder for music converted for use specifically by iPOD (I think this is AAC format). Anyhow, iTunes rips this music into a folder called "iTunes" with several folders in turn inside it within my larger music folder which otherwise contains folders for each artist. My complaint is that in Squeezecenter under Settings / iTunes, I have the "Use iTunes" checkbox UNCHECKED and if you hold the cursor over it, I think it leads you to believe that it will not use the iTunes music library if this is unchecked. As stated above, I only wanted Squeezecenter to access the original WMAs and not the duplicates I had to create for use with my iPod. After tearing my hair out for a while and wondering if meta tags or something else was causing this (since I am facing a separate issue with tags where when the Artist has multiple values it will duplicate in SqueezeCenter - i.e. Mariah Carey's E=MC2 appears a few times because one song has artist as Mariah Carey and another has the artist as Mariah Carey\\Jermaine Dupri, etc), I finally realized that as long as the iTunes folder is in the same folder as the rest of your music you're out of luck and Squeezecenter will scan it and use it anyway.... and so I ended up with a whole bunch of duplicate albums in Squeezecenter when listing artists and it was not immediately apparent why this was happening. I had to manually move all my iTunes files to completely different location outside of the normal music folder to prevent Squeezecenter from using it, when I expected that unchecking this box would do the trick. On the iTunes tab, my other settings are default - 3600 interval, Don't include unchecked songs, folder for xml location is populated with the original folder where iTunes was located, but iTunes music folder field is empty. The iTunes playlist format is default/empty. If you do not consider this to be a bug, at least I get to vent ;-)
"not using iTunes" means SC does not import the data that iTunes collects and stores (from a file called iTunes Library.xml or iTunes Music Library.xml). It does not mean that it causes SC to exclude any files referenced by iTunes. If you have the files in the music folder tree chosen for SC, then SC indexes it. Best practice would be to keep iTunes files in parallel to SC files rather then having them within the same tree. However, if your iTunes files are all AAC then there is an option available to you: server settings->advanced->file types. add the extension of the files you wish to have excluded in the "Disabled Audio File Extensions" box and rescan. That should do it. In future, venting is better taken to the forums where issues like this can be solved or bugs confirmed before making a report. Resolving the report. Feel free to reopen if you have any problems with the setting.
