Description Jim 2005-03-04 03:09:09 UTC
At present browse artwork sorts by album name. Would be nice to have an
additional "sort by artist name" feature.

e.g. (options on the home-page)

 Browse Albums
 Browse Artists
 Browse Artwork by Album
 Browse Artwork by Artist
Comment 1 Jim 2005-03-04 07:11:09 UTC
I was thinking, maybe the homepage could be changed a bit so it's not filled
with too many "Browse by..." lines.

How's about something like this:

 Browse Albums (by artwork)
 Browse Artists (by artwork)
 Browse Genres (by artwork)
 Browse Years (by artwork)
 Browse Music Folder
 New Music (by artwork)
 Browse Playlists

The "(by artwork)" text could be in italics and a different shade - the user
could click a Browse... option to browse as text or the "by artwork" to browse
the same list but using artwork.

Another cool option would maybe be to have artwork for playlists - e.g. a photo
of a empty bottle of Jack Daniels for a playlist of those songs you just want to
sing (very badly) when you're drunk :D

I'd suggest a slightly different approach to the interface. Have the normal
browse by options, but add a checkbox that the user would tick to view artwork
when browsing. You'd then be able to eliminate the "Browse by Artwork" link.
If artwork is "turned on" then show pages using the thumbnailed view, otherwise
show the standard table view. Artist name, album name and release year should
be displayed below thumbnails when browsing with artwork. Make the selection
stateful so that if a user returns to the server the option is either on or off
as they left it last time. This should be a user (cookie) based setting rather
than a server-wide setting.

Top idea. Method described by 'Jim 2005-03-04 07:11' sounds the best.

Although I'd put, '(with artwork)' not '(by artwork)' in the links after each existing browse link (album/artist/genre/year).

If by artist/genre/year, I'd like to see a break of some kind between each too.

with the css/template changes coming in 6.5, it should be possible (but not a current priority) to dump the browse-artwork menu item altogether. Instead, have the other templates conform to the "gallery" layout in any album context when artwork is presented. I had a mockup posted in another related bug (downside of subtle dupes) that supplied the artwork info along with any album. Moser skin is looks like it is already capable of an automatic switch between the two layouts. It could be activated by a checkbox, or by differnt links. Either way, it would just be another param in the url.

With the release of 6.5.0 and browse Albums with sorting and gallery view, this can be marked FIXED.
