Folders present in SqueezeCenter's music folder

I'm seeing a strange and annoying behaviour when browsing my music folder with my SB3 remote, that I don't encounter when browsing by artist (which should be quite the same, since I store all of my music as <artist>/<album>/<tracks> in my music folder) :

Browsing by artist :
- '6' cycles through "-M-", "Nada Surf", "Ojos de Brujo" and "A.J. Croce"
- '7' cycles through "Pan American", "Quasimode", "R.E.M.", "S.M.V." and "A.J. Croce"
- '8' cycles through "Talvin Singh", "U2", "The Verve" and "A.J. Croce"

Browsing by folder :
- '6' cycles through "Les Négresses Vertes", "Les Rita Mitsouko" and "2 Many DJ's"
- '7' cycles through "Les Rita Mitsouko", "Les Rythmes Digitales" and "2 Many DJ's"
- '8' cycles through "Les Rythmes Digitales", "Les VRP" and "2 Many DJ's"

Attached is a list of folders present in my music folder.

I'm not sure why behaviours are so different, but I'd bet it has to do with the "Les" article present on some of the folders.
It's a bit annoying, since I'm stuck to the 'L' letter, although I have lots of folders starting with letters 'M' to 'V'.

Tried 7.2 on my ReadyNAS and my Mac mini, and both have the same behaviour.

Browse Music Folder (BMF) tries to give you as exact a view of your folders as possible. Other browse modes use the tag information, potentially manipulated like eg. the articles removed as you mentioned it. Therefore you're right: if "les" is one of the ignored articles, then "Les Ritas..." or "Les Negresses" are listed under R or N respectively in the artists list. But no in the BMF. That's by design. Don't use BMF if you don't like it :-).

Michael,

As far as I understand what you're saying (which is what I thought was the way it's supposed to work), BMF should not treat articles differently.

Yet, it looks like it does some in my case, and that's why I created this bug report.

My understanding is that using BMF :
- '6' should cycle through "-M-" (or "Maceo Parker" or "M.A.N.D.Y.", don't know exactly how the folder sort order is handled), "Nada Surf", "Ojos de Brujo", "2 Many DJ's",
- '7' should cycle through "Pan American", "Quasimode", "Radiohead", "Sade" (or "S.M.V."), "2 Many DJ's",
- '8' should cycle through "Talvin Singh", "U2" and "Various Artists"

Am I wrong?

It does. While they're filtered out (if defined) in Artist/Album/etc. view, BMF won't do any such thing. It only filters out non-characters (as you can see from the "-M-" example)

Your cases are mostly correct.

> "2 Many DJ's",

Without looking at the code I'd say this won't show up. Numbers imho aren't stripped out.

> Am I wrong?

No, you're right. But then I don't understand what you're complaining about. Isn't this how it's working for you? I mean, in the above example there's no article which might confuse sthings?

Unless I misread you twice, that's what BMF is supposed to do :
- '6' should cycle through "-M-" (or "Maceo Parker" or "M.A.N.D.Y.", don't know
exactly how the folder sort order is handled), "Nada Surf", "Ojos de Brujo"
- '7' should cycle through "Pan American", "Quasimode", "Radiohead", "Sade" (or
"S.M.V."),
- '8' should cycle through "Talvin Singh", "U2" and "Various Artists"

But in my case, that's what BMF actually does :
- '6' cycles through "Les Négresses Vertes", "Les Rita Mitsouko"
- '7' cycles through "Les Rita Mitsouko", "Les Rythmes Digitales"
- '8' cycles through "Les Rythmes Digitales", "Les VRP"

Folder cycling with keys '1' to '5' and '9' works as expected, but I simply have no direct access to folder whose name starts with letters 'M' to 'S', using keys '6' to '8'. I'm stuck with folders starting with 'Les' using those keys.

Isn't this confusing enough for you ?
It sure is for me ! :)

BTW, "2 Many DJ's" is just the first foldear appearing in BMF.
That's why it appeared when cycling.

Must read 'M' to 'V', sorry.

I prefer using Artist browse, but I need to use BMF to add newly ripped albums without the need for a collection scan.
You know how slow those ReadyNAS units are, don't you? ;).

That's how I discovered that, wanting to access my "The Rolling Stones" folder, I could not get any folder starting with the letter 'T' using the '8' key.

I'm pretty sure it still worked with 7.1.

Oh, it is.

Created your folder structure from the uploaded file. Now I understand :-).

No comment :-)

change 23004 - display raw file names, don't remove articles when sorting (we don't do this neither in web nor sbc ui).
