Description Max Spicer 2008-08-27 10:44:32 UTC
Both my booms have started emitting a constant hiss through both tweeters. It happens regardless of power state and regardless of line-in settings (volume and always enabled). They are both running fw32, one is a pqp1 and the other a pqp3. I have nothing plugged into line-in and they are in totally different areas of the house.

Did they start simultaneously?

How loud?

How did you stop it?

Any further information would be useful. Any network drops? Boom reboots? ABTester installed?

Will somebody please try this with an MPQ unit? It sounds like the line-in is turned on. Does the line-in volume change it at all? Try adjusting line-in volume both in setup mode and connected to SC mode.

If this is a line-in problem, we can kludge a fix via the BDAC command.

How quiet are you talking about anyway? Normal is that you have to pretty much put your ear next to the grill to hear it. That's always been there.

Any louder than that though isn't right.

I don't know how long they've been doing it for. I was lying on my bed and noticed there was an odd hiss from somewhere. Once I'd tracked it to the Boom I went downstairs and verified that the other one was doing it. Changing line in volume does not affect the hiss. I don't have ABTester installed. I haven't found a way of stopping it.

Got to go so can't provide any more info, but I've said all I know at the moment. Andy can apparently reproduce on his though.

Loud enough that I could hear it from over half a meter away. I'm sure I'd have noticed if it's always done that as it was quite annoying. Not loud enough to hear in, say, a noisy conference hall though...

So, how loud is it?

Andy?
Comment 7 Andy Grundman 2008-08-27 11:11:35 UTC
I can only hear it if I put my ear up next to the speaker.

Bug 7681 is possibly related. It covers the state of the power amplifiers when boom is in an off state.

Max, have you tried reverting to an older version of the firmware? I have not noticed an increase in hiss volume myself.
Comment 9 Max Spicer 2008-08-27 14:51:28 UTC
I haven't tried reverting fw (yet). However, I've never noticed the hiss before and a Boom has been beside my bedside for some time now. I'm pretty certain I'd have noticed it before, as the first time I noticed it this evening it was loud enough to distract me when I was sitting on my bed reading a book (people moving around outside, birds singing etc). It's not loud, but certainly above background level on a quiet-ish evening.

In general, I would say that any perceptible noise is too loud for a device in off state, especially one that's going to sit by the bedside. Just as the correct brightness level for off is dark (well done on that one!), the sound level should be none.

It's probably not related, but I've been sleeping badly over the last week. I'm now wondering if that's because of the hiss. Almost certainly not, but you know how it is once something's been drawn to your attention...

I also hear this - about 25cm away from the grilles, if I'm in a silent room.

Sean: Caleb thought you had been working on it lately. Correct?
Comment 12 Max Spicer 2008-11-17 10:53:18 UTC
It's definitely still there in the latest 7.3. I've just put a boom on my piano and it's been gradually irritating me more and more over the last hour's playing! ;-)

sean/caleb: is this a dup of bug 7681?
Comment 14 Caleb Crome 2008-11-23 12:59:27 UTC
Yep, it's a duplicate. It'll be fixed with the same fix. i.e. turning the amplifiers off.
