Description Osama Zaidan 2008-08-14 14:23:21 UTC
Customer has PowerMac G4 (933 MHz PowerPC G4; Mac OS X Server v10.4.11)
Upgraded from 6.5.4 to 7.1

Client machines are:
Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon; Mac OS X v10.4.11); and
MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; Mac OS X v10.5.4).

The Squeezecenter is running fine the problem is the Safari will not open the Web interface. No error, the browser seems to be trying to open SC web interface for ever.
The web interface worked fine for SC 6.5.4
He downloaded and installed Firefox v3.0.1. Same result.

Osama: What exactly is on the screen? is there any error message? Can he load the web UI on the local machine?

Also, if it's not working in Firefox too, then it's not a Safari issue. I'd suspect it's a firewall problem on the Mac OS X server platform.

Please look out for JavaScript errors, too. FF should have an error console telling you about them. And make sure the user hasn't disabled JavaScript all together.

SqueezeCenter v7.1 is installed on SERVER running Mac OS X Server v10.4.11.

Able to start SqueezeCenter on SERVER using SqueezeCenter "tab" on System Preferences.

When click on "Web Access" button, Safari launches on server, and SqueezeCenter wizard runs.

Once wizard is finished, can no longer get SqueezeCenter web interface to run in Safari. Safari displays spinning gear in tab titled "Loading," eventually gives up, and displays blank page with the message, "Safari can't open the page 'http://localhost:9000/' because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection which sometimes occurs when the server is busy. You might be able to open the page later." Trying again later doesn't solve, and server just isn't that busy.

As for JavaScript, boxes are checked for: "Enable plug-ins," "Enable Java," "Enable JavaScript," "Block pop-up windows" in Safari Preferences under Security tab. I don't know how to disable JavaScript (other than by unchecking this/these checkboxes).

Let me know what I should check next.

JavaScript seems to be fine - otherwise the wizard wouldn't have worked.

I wonder whether the server is too busy to respond? Did you leave it running for a while to allow the inital scan to finish? What's the server's hardware? I understand your player can connect and play fine?

Do you see the same happen from the client machines?

Q: Did I leave it running...

A: I never turn it off.

Q ...for a while to allow the initial scan to finish?

A: How would I know? Is there a "scan finished" screen or similar? When I was using SlimServer v6.5.4, it took an awfully long time (it seemed) to rescan my music folder. Under SqueezeCenter v7.1, I never get to the web interface, just to the last screen (I think) in the wizard. Safari gives "unable to open page after last screen in wizard.

Q: What's the server's hardware?

A: PowerMac G4; 933 MHz PowerPC G4 with 512 MB SDRAM. My server is bit old to be sure, but SlimServer v6.5.4 worked fine with it, and I use the server every day, all day.

Q: I understand your player can connect and play fine?

A: Not anymore. Used to work fine with SlimServer v6.5.4. Now (with SqueezeCenter v7.1) I can't browse artists, albums, etc. Yes, my music files are still on the server. Yes, they play via Apple's preview column in the Finder. Here's the path to a song:

/Volumes/Music/Users Music/myshortname/Lossless/Eric Clapton/Unplugged/San Francisco Bay Blues.m4a

Here's the path I specified to my music folder in the wizard:

/Volumes/Music/Users Music/myshortname/Lossless

I don't have any playlists, but I specified a path to an empty folder in the wizard in case I create a playlist later:

/Volumes/Music/Users Music/Playlists

Hope this helps identif areas to test or troubleshoot. Let me know what I can do on my end to help.
Comment 6 Blackketter Dean 2008-08-17 09:35:11 UTC
The paths you describe don't look right, it should be something like:

/Volumes/Music/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Music/myshortname/Lossless

not

/Volumes/Music/Users Music/myshortname/Lossless

Osama: Can you follow up directly, this doesn't appear to be a bug, rather a support issue with the specific system. Reopen if you can tie it to a specific bug.
Comment 7 William W. Higgins Jr. 2008-08-18 15:30:08 UTC
Dean: I don't think you've got that right. My music folder is on a separate drive entirely from the "Users" directory (which contains home directories). The path below is the correct path to the folder where MY music is stored (and it's a a valid path; for an external drive, for instance):

/Volumes/Music/Users Music/myshortname/Lossless

This folder worked fine under SlimServer v6.5.4 just a few days ago (you showed me how to set up a somewhat more complicated music hierarchy/structure several years ago at MacWorld Expo; this is the plain vanilla version of that).

Real problem is that SqueezeCenter v7.1 web interface won't run at all after the wizard runs once.

All:

Just off the phone with Julius (Tier 2) Technical Support. He solved my problem.

Fix was to completely delete ALL SlimServer files/folders (from v6.5.4) on the server, and reinstall SqueezeCenter v7.1.

Osama and I want through this clean install once before, but it did not fix my problem. Presume that is because he missed/did not check some folder locations.

Suggestion: In the installer for SqueezeCenter, tell users that are upgrading from SlimCenter to delete X, Y, and Z before installing. This would have prevented my rather frustrating experience (and one week journey through Logitech/Slim Devices tech support)!

Even better: Have the SqueezeCenter installer scrub all old files that can screw up its installation.

Path to my music folder was/is/remains correct:

/Volumes/Music/Users Music/myshortname/Lossless

Improper path specification was not the problem.

Old/conflicting application related folders was the source of the problem.

Thanks for the feedback! Will take a closer look at this.
