Description Sean Adams 2008-08-11 13:59:19 UTC
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50860 (and there are many other threads like this one)

The miserable job that we do of trying to play 96KHz material on SB3/SBR is much worse than not trying to play them at all. Because we do this, people (understandably) get the idea that it's supposed to work. They think it's broken because the audio breaks up, and they usually refuse to accept that what they're hearing is not even a reasonable rendition of what the material should sound like if it were downsampled to 44.1/48.

I'm filing this as a SC bug because we don't need to change anything in the firmware, we need to change what SC does when it encounters 96KHz material. It needs to "showbriefly" some message to indicate that the file is not playable (I guess we already have some way to indicate unplayable files?). If the SB3/SBR is synced to a TP, then it should just be silent while the 96KHz material is playing on the TP.

If we must keep this capability to appease the vocal minority who like it, we should make it an obscure option in player preferences.

Alan, can you take a look at this?

What about the idea to transcode just those files (e.g to flac 44.1/48) - similar to bitrate limiting? Maybe a challenge for the new streaming system... :-)

With more and more devices i'm interested to play all tracks but wouldn't like the idea to generally transcode all songs to mp3 (or something else) especially if most of them are sub-96/88.2 ones.

kind regards,
Markus

Transcoding (Flac->SRC->FLAC) would be ideal.

Reduce number of active targets for SC
