Description y360 2008-08-06 12:32:23 UTC
The left-hand side pane of SC should allow scrolling via keyboard's page up/down buttons
Currently there's no way to place the mouse focus on the pane (using left mouse button) because the item lines are 'hot', i.e a left mouse selection anywhere on the item line selects the item, even if the selection is made between the item name on the left and the favorites/add/etc icons on the right

You can click the scroll bar, then use the key board. There's not much more I can do. How would you have expected this to work?
Comment 2 y360 2008-08-06 14:16:55 UTC
I should have qualified the bug to Firefox
It does work on IE as you say
Comment 3 y360 2008-08-06 14:26:00 UTC
So in Firefox hitting the scrollbar does not grab the focus throughout the default skin
There's a slight chance I'm affected by an add-ons though

Can reproduce this in FF (only Firebug installed). I wasn't even testing with IE, but with Opera ;-).

The question remains: how would you expect this to work? Add a gap somewhere to point at? (there already is one about 5px wide)

I notice now that there is indeed a small gap near the scrollbar that is usable for grabbing focus.
Perhaps it is sufficient although it is far from an ideal solution.
Easily scrolling through a list prior to selection seems to be the most essential use-case of SC.

Contrast with SN where one can just grab the focus almost anywhere in the pane and scroll down quickly using the 'space' key
I'm not familiar with SC skins, maybe there is an alternative there

Don't know how this should be fixed without adding non-functional whitespace (which already is considered as "wasted space" by many community members...).
Comment 8 y360 2008-08-14 09:07:30 UTC
Michael, when I select an item in SC web, I tend to unconsciously click the item **name** itself rather than the middle of the empty selectable space of the highlighted line

I suspect most people gravitate towards the name when making a selection, in which case that real estate that is currently selectable is wasted, and might be better used for grabbing focus to enable CTRL-FF and UP/DOWN buttons.

I guess that's a matter for a usability study or a religious war :-)

Let's give it another try...

Punting skin related issues as the web UI should see another overhaul post 7.4.
