Bugzilla – Bug 9053
Independent volume controls
Last modified: 2010-05-07 10:52:57 UTC
I have upgraded SqueezeCenter from version 7.0.1 to 7.1.0. My audio setting is a SqueezeBox v3, digitally connected to a receiver in the livingroom and analogue connected to a poweramp (with no volume control) for music in the garden. In version 7.0.1, the volume control setting of SqueezeCenter had the option to set it so that the volume controls adjusted the output, but for the analogue output only. The digital output was always 100%. This way I could adjust the volume in the garden with a SqueezeBox Controller and the volume in the livingroom with the receiver's volume control. Now in version 7.1.0, when enabling the volume control to adjust the output, it is setting the volume of both digital and analogue output. To avoid having my music at maximum volume in the garden, I have to enable the volume control but now I must open the volume for the receiver in the livingroom almost completely to be able to listen to music. This with the risk that when I switch music sources on the receiver that the new source will have the volume 'wide open'. Is there any way that the original volume control (controlling the analogue output only) can be restored in a next version. Or (even better) have two options for volume control in SqueezeCenter: one for analogue and one for digital? The latter will just give more flexibility for anyone who will control things in another way than I do. I hope my request is clear to you and obviously I surely hope that it can be implemented in a future release.
This was a result of the need to compress the firmware in order to fit a set of critical features...not exactly sure what, but it may be the Rhapsody 192k and higher bitrate audio support.
Sean: Do you think we can roll back the fixed digital only feature?
Yes but we should change the implementation to do the attenuation in the DAC instead of in software. All the pieces are already there...
Where should we target this?
Sean: Are we going to fix this for 7.2?
No, there are many more important issues ahead of it.
I'm adding my vote to have this addressed. My setup requires variable line out over analogue (to amp/speakers but no preamp or volume control so volume controlled by SB3) and fixed line out via digital (to DAC/headphone amp with its own volume control) and this recent change to making both outputs either fixed or variable has messed up my setup; I'm very disappointed with this change. May I suggest having 3 options in the drop-down menu: 1. Output level is fixed at 100% 2. Volume control adjusts outputs 3. Fixed digital out/variable analogue out
Sean: Can you look at this for 7.3?
Deferring to next release.
Just to add my perspective... I use digital out to my receiver and like to keep the seeting on Max volume. I also use the analog outs to listen to my headphones that are amped using a portable amp. For this setup I like to use the digital volume control to adjust the volume and the headphone amp set to allow max volume that is near uncomfortably loud for the loudest songs. With the changes, I have to keep making sure the max volume is set when listening to the reciever and speakers. Quite annoying considering that you'd expect actual improvement in functionality for each firmware upgrade. Please return this feature.
I would like to second comment #10. My setup is follwing: SB3 with powered speakers in one room and an amplifier in the nextdoor room which is connected to th SB3's digital out. It used to be a perfect setup for me, but since the volume of the digital out is not separately fixable, it is a pain to do so (if I fix the volume to 100%, I can only adjust the volume in the first room by crawling on the floor and turning the volume-knob on the speaker's amplifier...). So it would really be great if that functionality would return.... pleeeeease?
I too have a problem with my setup if I can't have the digital output set to 100%.I would greatly appreciate a fix for this.
I too would like to have the feature back. However, I am using a Transporter rather than an SB2/3. => Do I need to raise a separate bug? Or is it already covered in your plans?
I am also looking to manage the maximum volume sent from SBR to Cyrus Power Amp (speakers and amp can handle max volume but my ears can't!).
Sean: this feature will give much more _VALUE_ to SB. Please add it.
As I occasionally use the optical output to my workstation in order to editing but mostly listen to an Amp connected to the analogue's out it is paramount that I get the full range on S/Pdif but volume control on the analog. JoKi aka th00ht
I installed Squeezecenter 7.4 but the setting "preamp volume control" is still doing nothing when changed. I really need attenuation on the analogue outputs of my SB. Volume 1 is simply to loud sometimes. So I voted for this one -cheers
Hi there. Is it possible for someone to give an estimate on when this bug might be fixed please? I am the original submitter of the issue (Osama entered it on my behalf) and I am waiting for more than a year now for it to be fixed. Still running 7.0.1 here. Any feedback is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jack
(In reply to comment #18) I also would appreciate some feedpack on the progress (if any).
Sean - where are we with this bug - its stopping me purchasing more SB3 devices?
(In reply to comment #20) > Sean - where are we with this bug - its stopping me purchasing more SB3 > devices? Well Sean left the company a relatively long time ago. Logitech bug / enhancement team seem to have parked this forever unfortunately as they haven't re-allocated an owner.
I'll be honest, I don't know when this will be fixed, or even if it can be without removing some other SB3 features.
All new Squeezebox products are likely to be based on the SqueezePlay platform. We do not plan to implement any further enhancements to the ip3k firmware or which are targeted specifically at ip3k-based products.
