Description Joerg Schwieder 2008-07-22 15:11:32 UTC
I recently upgraded from 7.0.1 to 7.1beta on my MAC.
Now I have the following erroneous behavior with stream.mp3.
I'll explain with iTunes but the same happens with WMP.

- If I try to connect to stream.mp3, nothing happens (iTunes just shows "stream.mp3" or "Welcome to SqueezeCenter" and does not let me play it. No error messages)
- iTunes does not show up in squeezecenter
- Now when I START squeezeslave (or Softaqueeze, acts the same) (actually that means start playback), all of a sudden I can play the stream.mp3 stream and it will play squeezeslave's playlist. It will also show trach info for this playlist. This works with local files as well as with streams (e.g. LastFM).
- iTunes (stream.mp3) doesn't show up under my players and I can fully control it through squeezeslave. If I stop Squeezeslave's palayback iTunes will disconnect from stream.mp3, If I restart it, I can restart the stream on iTunes.

No errors in the log file.

Works for me. A few ideas:
- the SC web interface will take a few seconds to update the player list
- iTunes will take forever to fill its buffer

I'm pretty sure my installation is broken. The problem is: I have no idea how to fix this. Might happen to others, too.

I can rule out web I/F and iTunes:
This happens with ANY player I attach to the stream.
And it actually STREAMS to iTunes. The Softsqueeze (or squeezeslave) stream! If I stop softsqueeze, iTunes will stop, too (after a few seconds, when the buffer is empty) and disconnect from the stream.
When both (SoftSqueeze and iTunes) are on the same machine you have the nice effect of BOTH players playing the same stream through the same audio device with a few seconds delay in between. Cool. A canon-feature ;-)

Is there a way to completely remove SC and reinstall? reminds me of https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7972
Hm... Should I reopen that one?
Comment 3 Michael Herger 2008-07-23 03:56:01 UTC
Did you install the .dmg on top of the existing installation? Or are you running from SVN?

When you want to restart, remove any traces of SC in Library/Application Support, Caches, etc.

.dmg

I did already clean the cache etc. But will try again tonight.
Comment 5 Joerg Schwieder 2008-07-23 05:04:05 UTC
Ahm, forgot: The main reason I opened a bug was to make sure it doesn't happen again (as opposed to a service request). Is there any additional debugging I should try to do before I try to clean up?
Comment 6 Andy Grundman 2008-07-23 06:55:55 UTC
Did you have stream.mp3 and your Softsqueeze synced perhaps?
Comment 7 Joerg Schwieder 2008-07-23 07:19:31 UTC
I don't think so.
The stream.mp3 does not show up in the webUI (not in the default skin, not in iPeng).
Also, if I switch the player (shut down squeezeslave and start softsqueeze) it will use that other player. If I then restart the second player, that one plays independent of the first one + iTunes.

It is just like stream.mp3 was looking for some player to attach to...
Comment 8 Andy Grundman 2008-07-23 07:22:30 UTC
Hmm but stream.mp3 is independent of any player, it appears as its own player, i.e. "iTunes from 1.2.3.4".
Comment 9 Joerg Schwieder 2008-07-23 07:25:42 UTC
No, it doesn't. That's the issue.
Comment 10 Chris Owens 2008-07-24 10:42:28 UTC
Retargeting so this doesn't halt the 7.1 release.
Comment 11 Joerg Schwieder 2008-07-25 04:23:38 UTC
OK, I have removes every bit of SC I could find on my Mac and reinstalled 7.1
The problem is still there.
It does NOT show up, if the stream is opened first (with neither SqueezeSlave nor SoftSqueeze running) in this case I will get a separate "iTunes on 127.0.0.1" player.
Here's how to reproduce the issue on my Mac:
1. Start SoftSqueeze
2. Start SqueezeCenter
3. Play a playlist on SoftSqueeze
4. Start iTunes
5. in iTunes: Open Stream->http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3
6. iTunes will play the stream that is active on SoftSqueeze, will NOT show up in the list of players and it will react to controlling the SoftSqueeze playlist.
7. If I exit SoftSqueeze the iTunes stream will be terminated, too.
Comment 12 Spies Steven 2008-11-11 15:39:33 UTC
I am able to reproduce the issue described using the instructions in comment 11. The thing is this only seems to be an issue if one is trying to run SoftSqueeze and stream to iTunes on the same machine. I am able to run SoftSqueeze on the sever machine and stream to iTunes on a remote machine without issue even after following the steps in comment 11 for example. I have not noticed any other issues with streaming.

Tested with Version: 7.3 - 23875 on Mac OS X 10.5.5.

Not sure why someone would need to run SoftSqueeze and stream to iTunes on the same machine so I am resolving this bug as wont fix.

Please reopen and add additional comments if someone has a compelling reason to do this.
Comment 13 Chris Owens 2009-07-31 10:25:11 UTC
Reduce number of active targets for SC

Closing resolved bugs - if you feel this bug still exists please first re-test
with the latest SW/FW version. If you are able to reproduce then feel free to
reopen and attach new logs / steps to reproduce.
