Description Blackketter Dean 2008-07-15 06:40:37 UTC
The consensus is that new users are confused when the screensaver kicks in and they lose their navigation place.

I suggest that we rename the screensavers to:

"Now Playing" -> "Jump To Now Playing"
"Now Playing (Jump back on wake)" -> "Now Playing"

and make the latter one the default.

Brian: can you review this?

Brian, when you finish reviewing this, assign it back to QA and we can discuss it in the next bug meeting.

Andy points out that this makes it hard for people to get to song info and is a
pretty significant behavior change.

I think that the name change is less controversial.

Provided it doesn't cause other issues (I'm not sure I understand the context of Dean's comment correctly) I think renaming the "jump back on wake" version as simply "Now Playing" is a great idea.

But this raises the question of why the other version has a reason for existence. Returning the user to the main menu just isn't expected behavior for a screen saver. An analogy would be a Windows screen saver that closes all your windows and opens the Start menu each time it wakes up.

Additionally, if we are concerned that the user would miss having a screen saver that puts them back on the home screen on wake, I point out that it's pretty easy to get to the home screen via remote buttons, front panel shortcuts and the like.

Thus my recommendation is that we REMOVE the non-jumping version of the NP screen saver.
Comment 4 Blackketter Dean 2008-07-24 11:52:20 UTC
we can't really remove it, it's an existing feature that folks are already used to. Plus, I prefer it. :)

Michael: can you do the honors?

I think it may be a good idea to make jump-back the default, but I also think that it could be just as confusing to new users. With the current default, if you drill down into the nav structure and simply leave it there, then go on to do something else for hours (or days), it returns you to a familiar place. I can see more confusion from new users who are deep in some menu tree, leave it, and are confused when they "jump back" to someplace they've forgotten about from several hours or even days ago.

What about having a second timeout value for the "jump back on wake" saver? Set to maybe 15 or 60 minutes or something. After that amount of time it would forget wherever it was and go back Home.

I don't think renaming "Now Playing (Jump back on wake)" to just plain "Now Playing" is a bad idea, particularly if it's made the default. But the new name for the first one isn't great. There must be something better.

This is going to have to be fully explained in the setting info, since nobody is going to be able to make heads or tails out of these after you've renamd them.

For the "jump to now playing" I suggest these alternate names

Now Playing (return to main menu)
Now Playing (return to home screen)
Comment 8 Michael Herger 2008-07-25 03:09:17 UTC
change 22112 - change the screensavers' names.

I did _not_ change the default screensaver to be the "jump back" version. It's not clear from the discussion whether we want this (because _I_ like it ;-)) or not (because people want quick access to the track infos). Please re-open if it needs to be changed.
Comment 9 Blackketter Dean 2008-07-25 07:25:39 UTC
Sorry, michael, but the consistent feedback we've been getting is that the jump-back version should be the new default. Can you make that change?

change 22120 - make the "jump back" version default screensaver

How about a single Now Playing screensaver that combines the best of both worlds:
- a right arrow press goes into the track info
- a left arrow press jumps back to the last menu position
- a top/down arrow press scrolls in the current list context

Benefits
- it behaves as a sane reasonable user would expect it to
- no need to get creative with two screensaver names
- no need for users to understand the difference between 2 screensavers

This bug has been fixed in the 7.3.0 release version of SqueezeCenter!

Please download the new version from http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html if you haven't already.

If you are still experiencing this problem, feel free to reopen the bug with your new comments and we'll have another look.
