I am the user experiencing the playback restarts, below I have compiled a summary of all the information I provided to Julius.

---

I am experiencing an occasional problem with my Squeezebox 3 where playback of the current song restart randomly when part way through the track.

There is no pause before the restart, and although the track starts from the beginning, the track progress bar on both the Squeezebox and SqueezeCenter is not restarted. This doesn't happen consistently with certain mp3s, but does so randomly.

I have also noticed that occasionally the Squeezebox appears to restart itself when idle. The display will be showing the time of day, and then for about a second it goes blank, before the time reappears.

The spec of my computer is:
- Kubuntu 7.04 with all the default packages version, perl etc
- SqueezeCentre 7.0.1
- Jetway J7F2 motherboard
- Via C7 1.5Ghz CPU
- 1 GB DDR2 533 Ram
- Western Digital Raptor Sata drive (running the OS) and Western Digital Caviar Sata drive (holding data)
- Squeezebox connected to this computer using a short (1m) crossover cable.

More info from the Squeezecenter Status page:
- SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0.1 - 19705 @ Wed May 14 19:53:57 PDT 2008 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1
- Server IP address: 192.168.11.3
- Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
- MySQL Version: 5.0.38-Ubuntu_0ubuntu1.4
- Platform Architecture: i686-linux

I have managed to reproduce the restarting with all the logging turned up to debug, with the exception of memory logging which I set at error.

The attached server log is for my playback today, during which I experienced the restart problem previously described occurred at about 20:33 - I took a copy of the log file straight afterwards.

I have spoken to other users experiencing the same problems, please see the following forum thread.

Sounds like a bad network connection causing server disconnection. Try wireless, another cable, a switch, etc.
Comment 5 Chris Owens 2008-06-20 16:08:50 UTC
Hi Jonathan,

Does the display freeze up and go blank at the time it disconnects? That would definitely indicate a network problem, despite the extreme simplicity of your network. :)

Otherwise, there might be some kind of decoding problem. Did you actually *hear* 'Bang your Drum' and 'California Dreamer', the last two songs in the log?
Comment 6 Jonathan Hewer 2008-06-23 00:56:00 UTC
I've not noticed the display go blank/freeze when the song restarts, but it might be. It's kind of hard to tell without sitting there watching the display :p I'll keep an eye out.

Regarding the possible decoding problem - there appears of my no consistency with tracks restarting. I.e. sometimes a track will play fine, and at other times the same track might restart.

I can't remember exactly what songs I was listening to for the attached logs, however the problem only affects the song currently playing. It restarts, and after the song actually finishes, the next song will be played. No tracks are skipped.

I've not yet been able to get hold of any alternative networking hardware to try out, but I'm still trying.

Do the logs suggest any network problems around the time of the restart, about 20:33?

Thanks

Jonathan, have you had a chance to try some other networking hardware?
Comment 8 Jonathan Hewer 2008-07-31 00:23:53 UTC
I'm afraid I haven't - I do not have a spare router, nor do I have access to one.
Comment 9 James Richardson 2008-08-05 23:49:27 UTC
John: please re-test with SqueezeCenter Version: 7.2

Also, what network hardware do you use?
Comment 10 Jonathan Hewer 2008-08-06 00:43:49 UTC
I'm using a Buffalo router, this one here:

http://www.buffalo-technology.com/products/wireless/wireless-g/wireless-g-broadband-adsl2-modem-router/

I will give v7.2 a go. Thanks
Comment 11 Ross Levine 2008-08-06 14:41:23 UTC
Thats a wireless router, connect the SB3 with wireless and see if you can reproduce. Why are you using a crossover cable?
Comment 12 Jonathan Hewer 2008-08-06 14:48:20 UTC
My server, running Squeezecenter, does not have a wireless card and isn't close enough to my router to connect it with with a network cable, so I am use the Sqeezebox as a bridge - hence connecting my server to the Squeezebox with the crossover cable.
Comment 13 Ross Levine 2008-08-07 12:27:41 UTC
Thanks for clarifying Jonathan. I'm testing in the configuration you describe and so far unable to reproduce. You mention it is occasional, how frequently would you say you notice this?

Is there any chance you could try another crossover cable?
Comment 14 Jonathan Hewer 2008-08-07 13:02:18 UTC
It would happen on average once per hour I'd say.

I'm actually in the process of building a new server which I will be running my Squeezecenter off... I'll be interested in seeing if this has any impact.

Any update, Johnathan?
Comment 16 Jonathan Hewer 2008-09-25 01:29:43 UTC
Since running Squeezecenter off my new computer, I haven't had any issues.

Unfortunately, given that it's different hardware, different OS, and also a newer version of Squeezecenter, it's hard to single out any potential causes/solutions in particular.

The old computer had a 1.5Ghz CPU and 1gig ram so should have been able to handle it fine.... strange.

Closing this bug for now. If anyone else sees this or thinks they're seeing something similar please feel free to re-open with details. This bug is not clear, it could have been a number of different issues (networking or software). Jonathan it sounds like you're no longer seeing this with the new configuration, if you have any other issues you know how to reach us. Thank you for taking the time to work with me in this bug.
