Bugzilla – Bug 8398
SC does not read Year tag in WAV files
Last modified: 2010-07-27 05:09:42 UTC
I have been working with a user on and off for a while now regarding tagging his wav files. He has been successful in tagging his wav files using dbpoweramp, except SC doesn't read the year tag. All the other tag information the user has inputed is being read correctly by SC, but anything with a year value in the tag will show up in "Unknown" when browsing by year.
I think, but I could be wrong, that the SqueezeCenter implementation of reading the list tag for WAV files is based on ATWavTag which did not include support for the year tag. If this is the case then this would be an enhancement request. More information on ATWavTag can be found here: http://www.tasman.nl/AT/www.nas-kan.org/detritus/audiotron.shtml It may also be possible to support id3 tags on WAV files in SqueezeCenter as well which in turn would support more then just the basic tags. I will try looking into this when I get a chance.
Whenever tags and wav files are mentioned, response is "try FLAC". That has universally supported tagging and works very well with SC.
Please attach an example WAV file with a year tag to the bug. And yes, FLAC is a much better solution.
Steven do you have a way to make such a wav file? Could you attach one when you get a chance? One from any user running across this bug would be welcome, also. Examples from the wild are often more educational.
I appreciate the clarification about why everything else seems to work with these tags except Year. I suggest that until SC is able to fully handle WAV files that the documentation be changed to state that WAV files are not fully supported by SC. This may have an adverse impact on Transporter sales since many of those users are interested in pure sound which is a hard sell when the only formats supported involve some sort of compression. This may sound as crazy to you as it does to many in the general population. Audiophiles believe that they can hear things with compression as well as different qualities of hardware that are not desireable and many seem to be in a continuous quest to find something better. Fortunately for them, there have actually been studies that confirm that many of these people (but not all) are able to consistently make subtle distinctions in blind and double blind studies. I have tried FLAC in the past and feel that the sound I get from WAV is better -- better enough to purchase a larger hard disk before settling for compression. The "try FLAC" recommendation doesn't fly with me and it probably will not fly with many of your actual and potential Transporter customers. I appreciate your willingness to find a solution for this problem that doesn't require me to change the way I like to hear music.
Thanks for the update, we'll see what we can do. We do want to support as many formats as completely as possible. Again, please attach a WAV file with a year tag so that the bug can be addressed. (You do know, though, that by default SqueezeCenter will losslessly transcode WAV files to FLAC for reliable streaming over your network connection. Since this is a mathematically equivalent process there is no difference in the audio data.)
Brandon are you considering WAV TAGS support for new schema?
Already fixed.
