Bugzilla – Bug 8233
Connection problem with Zyxel router
Last modified: 2008-08-28 16:58:49 UTC
I tried to take the Boom to my parents house with the intention to try to establish a remote connection to the server at home through SSH. However, I got into problem already when the Boom was going to connect to the network. The network is based on a Zyxel wireless P-335WT router. The router is configured with 128-bit WEP protection and MAC address filtering enabled. After entering the WEP key, it tried to connect but didn't succeed in connecting to the network. Just to make sure, I temporarily disabled the MAC filtering in the router, but it still didn't work. So the Boom correctly finds the broadcasted SSID of the network but isn't able to connect to it. Giving up on the wireless alternative, I instead tried to connect the Boom to the router with a wired cable. The Boom now seems to be able to find the network, but it didn't find the DHCP server when it tried to obtain an IP address, so I had to enter a IP address or the Boom and name servers manually. Unfortunately I wasn't able to establish the connection to my SqueezeCenter at home through SSH due to other problems (not Boom related), so I couldn't actually verify that it worked after entering the IP address manually. Both an iPod Touch and a laptop computer did successfully connect to the wireless network at the same time, so I know the wireless network works. So I'm guessing this might be some incompatibility issues with the Zyxel P-335WT router my parents have. At home where everything works correctly I'm using an open wireless network with MAC address filtering configured in the router. I'll try again at the next visit with the latest Boom firmware, so let me know if there is anything I can do to debug the issue.
Do we have this Zyxel router model to test with?

(In reply to comment #2) > What router do you use at home? Is it the same Zyxel model? or something > different > At home I have a Belkin F5D7231-4 configured as an access point which is connected to wired D-Link 604 router. My parents have the Zyxel router which acts as a router besides also providing the wireless access.
I'm not seeing any P-335WT for purchase, I'll continue looking. Erland did you try WPA?
Erland would you be interested in swapping for a brand new router with us so we can have the P-335WT? Mickey we still have a few Linksys routers right?
No problem swapping. Erland -- just let me know which make and model you want as long as it's not too expensive! We can work out the details off-line.

Mickey we still have a few Linksys routers right? > Since the router isn't my own, I'm not sure I like to trouble my parents with an exchange yet. I'll verify if I get the same problem with the Duet and I'll also check if I can establish a wired connection with the Boom to SqueezeCenter by manually configuring the IP-address. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you find the problems without changing the router, running the Boom with a patched firmware or a patched SqueezeCenter won't be a problem if it helps.
I'm happy to say that my problems now have been solved. I'm not sure what the difference is but when I was back at my parents house yesterday the Boom successfully connected to the Zyxel router over WEP 128-bit. The differences I know is that my Boom used a patched version of firmware 5 earlier when it didn't work and now used the standard firmware 9. Besides this there is no difference in the setup that I can think of. So I suppose we can close this bug report ?
Please re-open if anyone sees this problem again.
