Bugzilla – Bug 8161
Hebrew text appears reversed on the Duet Controller
Last modified: 2011-04-26 06:34:12 UTC
Hebrew text, songs, albums & artist names appear reversed on the Duet Controller screen.
HI, As I understood from andyg - Slim Devices Developer, this bug is also relevant for the Squeezebox touch, which I was planning to buy. This is a major show-stopper for buying the SBtouch since a third of my audio content is in the hebrew lang. Please see what you can do in-order to resolve this bug as soon as possible. You have a big community waiting for this fix.
Triode is this something you could have a look at? As always, just let me know if not. Is this related to bug 12737 or different?
This is different from bug 12737 as it needs specific support in Squeezeplay. I would hope Tom can look at this one. (are you ok to take the bug Tom?)
No one has taken any ownership of this bug, and it remains a big problem when using the duet controller with Hebrew title content. Can you please assign someone to handle this bug? Thanks Kobi
HI, Can any-one comment on this bug, and let us know when or who is assigned to resolve it? This is also crucial for the SB touch. You have a big community waiting for this fix. Please see how you can expdite this. Thanks
Just upgraded to 7.5 embedded, and am disappointed to see that my Israeli albums are still displayed in dyslexic Hebrew on my Duet controller. (In the web control, everything looks great...) Is this something that can/will be addressed?
Lack of right-to-left display also means Hebrew RSS feeds cannot be read (unless you are Leonardo da Vinci :-)). This and the wrong display of Hebrew titles is a showstopper for marketing SB products in Israel (at least).
I can comment on the technical aspects of this bug, but not whether it will be prioritized to fix. The problem lies with our text rendering engine, which does not support right-to-left text. Tom (who is no longer working on squeezebox) did a lot of work about a year or more ago on replacing SDL text rendering with a technology called Pango, which supports many more features for rendering text, including right-to-left text, mixed weight characters, etc. Pango support was dropped because it was determined to be too risky to the current effort that was going on at that time. It has not been taken up since then. To summarize, there would have to be a new effort by different engineers to bring in Pango to support Hebrew text. The work that Tom did could be leveraged somewhat, but it's far from done. Further, replacing SDL with Pango will likely result in needing to rework the entire UI layout, because font variables like kerning and leading will be markedly different. In other words, it's possible but it will be a sizable effort with a fair amount of risk. The prioritization of this fix will have to come from our product marketing people, not from engineering. I hope this doesn't cause flames...I'm merely trying to be informative with this, not dismissive. I do recognize that having right-to-left characters render in reverse is not acceptable.
Hi, I understand the complexity of the fix, but I encourage you to fix it ASAP. I bought the touch assuming I can use it. currently its practically useless as almost half of my files are hebrew. hopefully the product marketing raises its priority. Aric
Hi guys Any news with that issue?
I apologize, but this bug is not going to be fixed. It would require a major technical effort and the engineering team is not going to be given the necessary priority or resources to complete it.
I cannot express in words the levels of disappointment I feel about this. My next set of players will NOT be from Logitech.
3 years .. to hear that it will not happen... well it is a good time to look for other products / companies that do support Hebrew ...
