Description Dan Evans 2008-05-08 09:51:17 UTC
Support is continuing to get calls with customers stuck in the firmware downgrade failure/loop. It's what appears to be an "upgrade" loop, but it's not.

Duet is connected to SqueezeNetwork and the user tries connecting to SqueezeCenter instead. The Controller says it needs to update firmware. The update then fails, the Controller reboots, and on starting immediately tries updating again. This loop is endless.

These are all customers who are on fw r2409.

a report from one customer: (080408-003196)

"Unfortunately, the controller now seems to be locked in an endless loop: [he's trying to connect to SC 7.0]

(1) It says it wants to update the firmware of the controller (even though the firmware is already 7.0.1.r2409).
(2) I select begin update.
(3) It displays "Copying Update", the there is no motion or progress meter ("X% copied") as I've seen before.
(4) After 10-15 seconds it powers down, then restarts.
(5) I get back to screen in (1).

I've tried holding down the 'Home' button but it doesn't power down, just power cycles back to the firmware update screen in (1).

I've had it. I want to spend time listening to my music, not fiddling with getting this flaky thing working."

He's returning his Duet.

Dan, have you been able to reproduce?
Comment 3 Spies Steven 2008-05-08 12:15:21 UTC
I have not been able to reproduce this.

These are the steps that I have tried.

1 Connect a Duet with 18/1425 to SN, updates successfully to 22/2097
2 Navigate to software update on jive and select network update
3 Update completes successfully and I now have 2409 on jive
4 Navigate to music source and pick a local 7.0 SC
5 Get update screen and choose begin update
6 Update completes successfully and I now have 2097 on jive again

I am not sure what would cause jive 2409 to fail downloading the firmware. Is it possible that the firmware image on the customers server is corrupted? Perhaps the user has installed a beta and then went back to 7.0 without uninstalling first resulting in a mix of file versions.

I would suggest a complete uninstall of SqueezeCenter and then try reinstalling a fresh copy of SC 7.0 while also factory resetting Duet before connecting again.

Now that 7.0.1 is released, this issue should go away. Re-Assigning the bug to TS to monitor. IF you see more issues, please add comments and assign to QA.

NOTE: This is the current Firmware Path.

SC/SN 7.0: SB1 r10/40, SB2/3 r86, TP r36, Jive r2097, Ray r22

SC/SN 7.0.1: SB1 r10/40, SB2/3 r88, TP r37, Jive r2448, Ray r23

When SN will only force an upgrade to the current version(s) listed above, based on the current firmware on the device attaching to SN. I.E. Jive with FW 7.0 r2063 upgrades to 7.0 r2097 (NOT 7.0.1 2448)

If the customer has 7.0.1 firmware on the device, and then they attach to a 7.0 SC, they will be prompted to downgrade. This is expected behavior in SC 7.0 To solve this issue, please have customers upgrade to 7.0.1
Comment 5 Andy Grundman 2008-05-15 16:18:05 UTC
Later today, SN will upgrade 7.0 Jive firmware to 7.0.1 2448 as agreed upon in today's meeting.

Dan, is support still seeing this with the current firmware?
Comment 7 Dan Evans 2008-06-13 14:24:26 UTC
We have had no new reports of this in several weeks.

Marking this as fixed, please reopen if it starts happening again, Dan.
