Bugzilla – Bug 8031
Trial Sirius account in SN can be confusing to use
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:27:36 UTC
After activating your Sirius Radio trial account in SqueezeCenter, it is not easy to understand how to get to the Sirius menus. In the SN UI, when you click on Sirius Internet Radio in the Internet Radio section, you still need to click on the link that states the following, "xx days left in your free trial. Sign up for only $12.99 a month at Squeezenetwork.com. Go right to use Sirius". Should this message be more clear since you can't go right within the SqueezeNetwork UI? Also, the message takes a long time to scroll through on the player interface and can also confuse users that don't wait long enough to read the entire message.
Brian to investigate a better UI experiance
I think the quick fix would be to have it say " Your trial has been activated. You have 29 days remaining." on the first line in normal font weight. Then "Continue with Trial" on the second line and "Activate Account" on the third line both with a small indention and in bold. The first line would not be a hyperlink, the second line would take you into the menus, while the third line would take you to the Sirius page in which you sign up. I've attached a mockup

I can make it a 3-item menu, but changing fonts or spacing is not possible. The SC/SN web UIs are very generic and use the same menus as the player UI. SIRIUS -> Your trial is active. You have 29 days remaining. Continue with Trial -> Normal channel list Activate Account -> Visit www.squeezenetwork.com to sign up.
Yeah that works for me...we can't use   tags?
Is the idea that this menu appears every time the user navigates in? I think that this is the real problem...
Yeah that's a good point Dean, at this time it does appear every time. Another solution is that we put the "Your trial is active. You have 29 days remaining" at the top of the Sirius screen until you active your account. I know that we don't have a lot of options as to how we display text like Andy mentioned, but what if we used some characters to distinguish it from other menu items? Like: <-- Your trial is active. You have 29 days remaining --> It would still be a hyperlink and it would go to SqueezeNetwork where you can activate your account.
I think the real problem is in the player and SBC UI. Hard enough for a new user to navigate there. Andy: what was the reason for this approach?
My thinking was that it's there to remind people they're using a trial, have X days left, and should go sign up. I'm fine with removing it though, making the trial work exactly like a real account until it expires.
Ok, I wanted to make sure that this wasn't a requirement from Sirius. I don't think it's bad to include this information, it just seems a bit too heavyweight now.
Want to remove it? I also did a similar menu for Rhapsody.
Julius' comment is mostly about the fact that we tell the user to go right to continue even on the web UI. What if we just simplified the text to: XX days left in your free trial. Click to continue. That's ambiguous enough that it should work in all UIs, but it's not perfect. We want to customize that string based on the UI, which may be a challenge technically. Can you comment, Andy? I think that it's a benefit to the user (and the marketing of the service) to remind the user that they are in a trial. Other approaches could be to add the trial text at the beginning, end or as a SBC slider/toast in the menu. Thoughts?
Andy says he is not changing the string based on the UI.
This bug is being closed since it was resolved for a version of SqueezeNetwork which is now released! If you are still seeing this bug, please re-open it and we will consider it for a future release.
