Shorten First Line Text in Setup to Fit Display (Was: Scrolling of first line of text needed for setup displays)
Last modified: 2008-08-28 16:58:49 UTC
With Boom now localized for 10 languages, I've noticed on Finnish (E.g., Suomi) that during setup the top line of the Boom front display frequently has strings that are too long to fit on the screen. The second line scrolling looks great, but the top line could use scrolling to allow the user to see the whole thing.
I suggest we ask the localization team to shorten the strings, if possible.
Looks like German and Danish are possibly the worst offenders of the Boom languages. If you choose Danish, you see "Konfiguration af Squeezebox (2" and you actually don't see the whole "2". It looks like 30 characters is the maximum on the first line. In English this is "Squeezebox Setup". The alternative translation is "Opstellings Squeezebox (2 of 6)" which means "Setup Squeezebox". That's 31 characters, which is one more than 30. I don't think alternative translations would work all of the time. I would suggest having the translators find alternative or abbreviate appropriately on the next round of translations. We'll probably also need to identify each of the strings that are too long for them too.
For the example given, "Konfiguration" would probably be sufficient, they don't need the word Squeezebox there. Let's see what we can do to shorten the strings...
Setup strings to shorten for all languages identified in attached file. I went through setup for each language and took a look at all of them in context, not just looking at the strings file or the text viewer. I used a bit of judgment on them -- if it was the first (top) line of screen that was too long, then I definitely listed the string. If it was the second line that was too long and it scrolled, but it would look much better if it didn't scroll, I included that one too. Of course, I don't speak all 10 languages, so there may have been some instances where it really should be shortened.
