Slim server used to let you display by file name only (without the file extension.)  This seems to be missing on Squeeze Center but was a feature I used  a lot because most of my older mp3's are ordered by file name but that info isn't in the tags.

FILE still does the trick: with "FILE.EXT - FILE" as title format I'm getting 
02 Little Black Heart.mp3 - 02 Little Black Heart

Thank you.  When I first tried, SC wouldn't let me type in FILE.  Whatever the reason I went back and it now works.
