SlimServer played 24/96 flac just fine, on SqueezeCenter there is a static noise, and music is not clear.

Niels,
What Slim Devices hardware do you have and what output are you using? What 24/96 source file are you playing when you hear the static? What version of SqueezeCenter are you using? You can check the version by selecting Settings then Status on the SqueezeCenter interface.

Player is SB3, SqueezeCenter 7.0 17793, firmware 86.
Run wireless, never had a problem with it.
Use the dac in my integrated Bryston amplifier.
The flac file in mention is app. 3500 kbps when transferring.
Here is the link to the file : http://01688cb.netsolhost.com/samplerdownload/ , choose Historic de Soldat.
Tried to attach it but it will not load for some reason.
This file played just fine on SlimServer.
The music is heard with SqueezeCenter 7.0 but especially the bass is gone and replaced with static noise.

Settings for files in SC is:
Flac > Flac > Native
         MP3 > Disabled
         Wav > Flac

Niels, I believe you may be running into bug 4886.

Please try encoding your test file to flac using the --fast or -0 option. This will make the flac a bit easier for the processor in the Squeezebox to decode.

I have no idea why at this time that you are experiencing this issue with SqueezeCenter 7 and not SlimServer. Do you recall which version of SlimServer worked for you?

Perhaps a different Screensaver was chosen after the upgrade to SqueezeCenter 7 that caused just enough strain on the processor to cause the audio to break up.

Thank you for feedback. I am not so familiar with encoding flac, not sure what you mean. I guess I could make a cd with the tracks and import these to the ITunes library, then they automatically become Apple Lossless, right ?
I was using SlimServer 6.5.3 by the way.
My screensaver has always been "Now Playing", I can try and switch it off and try again....
Thank you.
Niels.

Niels, if you were to make a CD of the track it will no longer 24/96 but 16/44.1. Also keep in mind that the Squeezebox currently only supports outputting a max of 24/48. So even if you are playing a source of 24/96 on your Squeezebox you will actually be sending 24/48 to your dac.

You might want to try reprograming the xilinx chip. Instructions can be found here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PlayerFirmware

24/96 FLAC 1.2.1 encoded file with the --fast option

Try this file and see if you still get static noise.
Comment 8 Niels Nielsen 2008-03-22 17:39:52 UTC
Excellent, no noise.
You will have to explain the "--fast" thing, I have no idea what this is. And the modification of the xilinx chip I know even less of, Didnt find much info on the link.
Kind regards Niels.

Neils, the --fast is just an option to use when creating a FLAC file.

More information can be found here: http://flac.sourceforge.net/documentation_tools_flac.html#encoding_options

Until bug 4886 I feel your best bet would be to reencode your 24/96 FLAC files using the --fast, also known as level 0, option. You can do this with a number of different programs such as dBpoweramp.

As far as the xilinx chip is concerned it is just a good idea to reset it when downgrading from beta firmware.
