Description James Rome 2008-02-25 06:40:39 UTC
Often I want to listen to one piece while falling asleep.
For Classical music, this might encompass several tracks. That is not an option. You can pick one track or 15-minute chunks.

They way to fix this is to require the user to enter a number (1-9) after the first sleep after N tracks appears. If the user enters a number, that is the number of tracks. If the user presses the sleep key again, he obtains the usual sleep after 15*N minutes menus.

And there is a bug on sleep after a track. This should not be faded out. The user obviously wants to listen to the whole track!

If you want to play out a playlist and have it stop at the end, just turn off repeat. Would that be a good workaround to your problem?
Comment 2 James Rome 2008-02-25 09:47:50 UTC
Not really since I never use playlists. They don't make a lot of sense for classical pieces. Usually one plays a whole piece with all tracks.

And the fade out after sleeping for a track is definitely a bad thing.

I think there is very much such a thing as too many options. We have already had users complain about the "end of song" option getting in the way of the older, simply 15 minute increments.

For example, I have yet to see a television that offers a "sleep at end of this film" option. The closest is a 'turn off after so many hours of no input', or 'turn off when no signal detected'. In the case of Squeezebox devices, this is utterly pointless as there is no OFF. It make no sense whatsoever to keep pretending unless there is an actual power saving involved. Even with the display fully dark, it's 5W whenever there is no playback.

Fading is NOT a bad thing. In fact, I'm certain that when it's been broken, bug have been filed and posts made complaining about the "weak design" that allows sleep to simply, harshly shut off.

again...backstory.

fading is great for the timed sleep options, but it makes no sense for the end of track option. The track should end, as it was designed to.

And my interface suggestion adds no key pushes to people not interested in this.

I agree, James, sleeping to the end of the track should not fade out.

I think you misunderstood my other point, though. When I said "sleep at end of playlist" I mean the list of songs that you have queued up to play, under Now Playing. It will stop at the end naturally (and not fade, as a bonus.)

Actually, my suggestion is different. I never ever use a playlist. I always select a full album because I listen to Classical Music. So, I have a whole album with maybe several compositions in it, each with several tracks. I want to sleep after, say the first album which may be 3 or 4 tracks into the whole album.
I think my proposed fix is elegant and would be useful for may people.

I would like to add my support for this option. I'd like to have a sleep at end of playlist option.
