Description Julius Dauz 2008-02-15 15:30:43 UTC
A customer I've been working with wanted to file an enhancement request so I am doing it for him.

Here is his description of want he is looking for:

>My enhancement request is this:

>Have the quick scan (look for new and changed music) accurately
>update the search database information in the least time, for all
>formats supported, just by clicking the button, without requiring
>iTunes or "adding" any files to now-playing, or playing any
>files. I myself use FLAC files which precludes using iTunes, and I
>also wish to organize my own files.

>I'm sure the programmers would know how to do this, buy my own idea
>(as a former mathematician and programmer for RCA Defense Electronic
>Products) is this: (1) Read the music folder directory info into a
>memory array which includes a logical tag (T/F) field. This field
>will indicate if the file is new (doesn't exist in the previous scan
>database). (2) Blank two similar tag fields for all records in the
>previous scan database. These fields will indicate (a) if file
>still exists (b) if file has been updated, as indicated by a newer
>date-modified for the file. (2) Scan the music folder directory info
>array (not accessing the music folder). For each file, set all tags
>appropriately, both in the array and the database. Update the scan
>database by accessing only new or newly modified files. Add the new
>files to the database. Update the file-text info (title, artist
>etc) for only the newly modified files. Erase database records for
>files no longer existing.

Thank you for reading my enhancement request, and thank you for a
thoughtful and highly useful interface for my music collection.

It sounds like he wants the scan faster, which we're working on. His specific suggestions don't really apply, but I like his spirit.

I would rather have the scan accurate than faster, and apply to FLAC. It fails to detect changes in titles. I don't use Itunes. I was told Itunes is required for accurate quick-scan. Some files (sent to Julius) cause hangup in scan.
