Description Richard Titmuss 2008-02-12 01:49:57 UTC
A few times now the beta testers have posted that they were confused as often the SBR is named 'Squeezebox X', for example 'Squeezebox 2'. It may be less confusing to name it 'Receiver X'?

I realize now that the behavior is not what I expected. I was expecting that you'd only get a new device named "Squeezebox 2" if there was an existing device with the name "Squeezebox". If the user has renamed their first player then the NEW player is just "Squeezebox".

some users will get confused about anything simple. I'd suggest something more obviously complex, thus not to be confused with any previous or future model names. Something like "Squeezebox_C28F". I think the receiver is already doing this for the adhoc wireless; it's rather common on other default ssids.

I think current behaviour is a whole lot better than the previous IP address approach, and is probably only causing confusion to people who've been using SBs for a while and think Squeezebox 2 or 3 means the 'device'.

An easy solution might be to default name them Player 1, Player 2 etc?
Comment 4 Michael Herger 2008-03-12 01:16:03 UTC
Or we could make it behave the same as on the Controller, where we get the last few numbers of the MAC address?
Comment 5 Alan Young 2008-04-02 11:24:53 UTC
I propose to resolve this by doing away with the (internal) concept of a default name. Any new player will simply be given the first available name for its class (e.g.: 'Squeezebox', Squeezebox 2', ...) that is not already in use by any other player ever known to (still in the prefs file of) this SC.

Sounds good. Does this mean, though, that if you restart the server, the names may get changed depending on the order that they reconnect?

Comment 7 Alan Young 2008-04-02 14:02:57 UTC
No, they get a name the first time they are seen and that is saved in the preferences. It only ever changes if the user changes it.

This bug has recently been fixed in the latest release of SqueezeCenter 7.0.1

Please try that version, if you still see the error, then reopen this bug.
