Leave the ABC list up after picking an album/artist when browsing by album or artist
Last modified: 2008-02-04 07:25:34 UTC
Currently when you are browsing by album or artist in the default skin there is an "ABC" ribbon at the top to skip around the list with. However, if you pick an album or artist then you loose the ribbon. If you click back to the root album/artist page with the breadcrumb then it goes and fills the first page list. This is a waste if you just wanted to jump from an "F" album to an "R" album, etc. The ribbon doesn't take up much in the way of space and since you have to go into the browse by album or artist to see it initially it shouldn't add any clutter/complexity to the look and feel. It would aid in quickly navigating around an album collection, significantly, though.
We'll consider this for 7.0.1. Michael: what do you think?
The page bar is used to jump within a category if you have more than one page full of items. You don't loose it, it's just not displayed if you don't have more than one page within a category. Thus if you're on an artist's page it will show the list for the albums. If you had a few more albums by some artist, you'd have it again. Your plan won't work, as you'd potentially end up with a bar for every level you've come along. Imagine Genre -> Artist -> Albums -> Multi-disc album with eg. 30 songs. This could be as many as four bars. If you drop the unneeded, you'd end up with an inconsistent UI. With the current bar approach this is impossible. Setting target to future, and even then I doubt it can be done. One way I could imagine is using dropdown lists in the crumblist. Not something we should try before the db rework.

Well, the Artist and Album paths would have, typically 2 or, at most, 3 (multi-disk) so that wouldn't be too bad (visually) - they don't take up much space. They would also be more likely to be randomly jumped around in as well. Even with the Genre starting point it would typically be 2-3, I would think. So, it would kind of look like a flat tree if there were several levels involved? - very fast to navigate through in addition to being pretty compact: Genre: ABCDEFG...Z (might be able to do the actual Genres if there aren't too many...) |_ Artist: ABCDEFG...Z |_ Album: ABCDEFG...Z If there are other ways to address the request that would be great as well. The goal of this request is to improve large collection navigation/browsing.
