Bugzilla – Bug 6675
Difference in sound quality between 7.0 and 6.5.4
Last modified: 2008-01-20 10:59:38 UTC
When playing 24bit 48khz wave files with squeezecenter 7.0 there seem to be a big change in sound quality compared to 6.5.4. It seems to play the audio files as MP3 although the lame settings is on No Limit. I had to revert back to 6.5.4 and you just notice a big change. 6.5.4 sounds more lively, instuments are much clearer. I also notice that 6.5.4 does not come with any Lame software, I believe its optional. It seems the Lame spoils all the fun. NB: I installed 7.0 on Windows server 2003, same for 6.5.4.
Lame is not included with 7.0. Please provide a log with player.source set to debug.
unfortunately cannot provide and log as i've removed beta version 7.0 and have installed 6.5.4, however after installing 7.0 it did state that Lame has now been sucessfully installed on computer. I dont remember installing lame additional option. Please confirm whether Lame will have an effect on the sound quality and also the streaming of squeeze box 3. Also has the sound settings changed in 7.0, I'm suspecting as a diffirent DAC is being used in the Duet maybe 7.0 is more tailored for that specific product. I have squeeze box 3, however I intend to buy the controller and use as my primary remote.
How do i provide a log the the squeeze box 3.
Of course transcoding via LAME will affect sound quality, but this will only happen if you explicitly set a bitrate limit for your player or change the settings on the Advanced -> File Types page. You can tell if transcoding is being done by checking for a lame.exe process running while playing, or looking in the track info menu for the bitrate item, it would say something like "(transcoded to 320kbps MP3)" To get a log, go to Settings -> Advanced -> Logging and change player.source to DEBUG. Then play the file in question. After that, access your server with /server.log?lines=300 Look in the log output for anything mentioning LAME.
I presume i've got to install the beta version of 7.0 again? if that is the case I'll install 6.5.4 an install 7.0, then generate the log for you. On a seperate issue, I noticed 7.0 is much slower in response compared to 6.5.4. Not too sure whether its more to do with the graphic interface than anything. I'm running a pentium 4 2.8ghz PC with 1gig memory, with windows server 2003 as my operating system. I'll get back to you once I install the beta version of 7.0, unless you have a more up to date version?? Regards
Created attachment 2690 [details] Log File Hi Andy, Please find attached document, a screen dump of the process running in memory when playing wave files through squeeze center 7.0 beta. It seems to be streaming in Flac format although I’m playing a 24 bit 48khz wave file. I’ve also attached a log file, don’t know whether this is the log file you are looking for. Please let me know. I couldn’t find any Lame.exe so I guess its probably been resolved, however its definitely playing in flac format. When you end the process, it skips the track and then reloads it again when the next track is playing. Regards

OK, SC does WAV -> FLAC by default to save bandwidth. You don't lose any sound quality this way. You can disable this under Settings -> Advanced -> File Types to stream raw WAV to your player, which will use twice the bandwidth.
Hi Andy, That seems to have done the trick, however what else can I do to improve the quality from the player? I've noticed a big difference. I have expensive equipments hence it reflects when the changes are made. Do you know what native means for the wave? Please find attached Thanks very much
