Description Jim McAtee 2008-01-18 18:01:46 UTC
I know, that's what is supposed to be there, right?

If you happen to tag a compilation album with either ALBUMARIST or BAND set to 'Various Artists' and haven't also explicitly marked it as a compilation using the COMPILATION tag, then SC will not recognize the album as a compilation (it leaves the compilation column in the albums table NULL).

Then under 'Various Artists' the album doesn't appear. There must be some that only pulls up compilation albums for this artist, which I wouldn't think is necessary.

Just noticed something else that is the same issue. I have a compilation album which I've tagged with an ALBUMARTIST. It's explicitly given a COMPILATION=1 tag, and it gets marked as a compilation album in the database. It gets listed under the 'Various Artists' artist even though it says 'by So and So'.

So I guess what's happening is that simply all albums with COMPILATION=1 are being retrieved, rather than getting all of the albums "owned by" the VA artist.

Jim: Are you saying that songs with explicit "Various Artists" tagged don't appear at all?
Comment 3 Jim McAtee 2008-01-21 11:09:16 UTC
No. Albums _without_ an explicit compilation tag and with an ALBUMARTIST of 'Various Artists' won't be reachable through the artists list. They don't appear under the VA artist.

i think i touched on some of these issues on the forum a while back.

my posts are quite long in the thread, but i think well worth the read:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38930

there are definitely questions to be resolved about how SS handles tag fields and how users should use them.

I thought I'd chime in and say I'm also seeing the behaviour described in comment 1. I'm on v7.0 r17707.

I have several albums where they have COMPILATION=1 set and ALBUMARTIST=Tallis Scholars. The ARTIST for each track is the composer of the track. From the web and player UI, they are listed under "Various Artists" as being by "Tallis Scholars".

I'm not sure when it started - I don't think it used to be like this. What's the proper behaviour? I'd like COMPILATION=1 to suppress the track artists from being listed in browse artists (it does) and for setting an ALBUMARTIST to cause the album to be listed under artists (not under VA) as being by the ALBUMARTIST.

Could you please give the latest 7.0.1 another try - I've checked in change 18484 which fixes some mis-behaviour with albums tagged "Various Artists".

Please let us know what the remaining issues are (and reopen) so we can figure out what to do with this bug?
Comment 8 Chris Owens 2008-07-30 15:33:24 UTC
This bug has now been fixed in the 7.1 release version of SqueezeCenter! Please download the new version from http://www.slimdevices.com if you haven't already.

If you are still experiencing this problem, feel free to reopen the bug with your new comments and we'll have another look.

I'm still seeing the behaviour described in comment 1 and comment 5 with v7.1 after a wipe and rescan.

Hmm. Has ability to reopen bugs gone away?

Commenters can't reopen bugs, only the original reporter and administrators. I don't think I actually tested whether or not this was fixed and nobody else has verified it either. I'll try to do some testing tonight.

As for comment #5... I believe what you're seeing is the expected (and likely also the desired) behavior. If you explicitly mark something as a compilation, then the album belongs to Various Artists. The ALBUMARTIST string just overwrites what is displayed for the album. Bug 5108 addresses the question about suppressing track artists on non-compilations, which is closer to the problem that you're dealing with.

Reduce number of active targets for SC
Comment 13 Alan Young 2011-04-08 00:10:13 UTC
What is the status of this with onebrowser (latest 7.6 builds)?
Comment 14 Mike Walsh 2011-04-08 02:54:34 UTC
this bug is essentially an earlier version of bug 9523 and should NOT be marked closed or fixed! it is not fixed in 7.5.x

who marked it fixed, and why?
