Bugzilla – Bug 6311
Uppercase characters cropped
Last modified: 2008-05-15 13:00:46 UTC
In the German translation there are several menu items which start with an uppercase umlaut. These characters are cropped, thus displaying as the non accented character. I consider this a major problem, as this usually is the result of _very_ cheap translations. This would provoke bad reviews in the German press.
Created attachment 2493 [details] A badly displayed menu item This should be "Überblendung", not "Uberblendung". I don't know whether the character is missing from the font or whether it's cropped at the top.
This is an SDL_ttf problem, using the SDL_ttf test program with: ./showfont -utf8 ../freefont-debian/FreeSansBold.ttf 16 "Überblendung" The umlaut is missing.
That's a bummer. Then we should advise the translators _not_ to use any uppercase accented character. Seriously: a product which doesn't display umlauts looks cheap. As minor as this seems, it's imho a killer in any review.
Also a problem with Norwegian characters. For instance, Å is displayed as A.
Fixed in r1591.
Ah, I've fixed the labels but the textarea and input widgets need fixing too.
Looking good - Thanks!
All fixed in r1594, r1595.
