Bugzilla – Bug 6068
Shuffle isn't random enough
Last modified: 2011-11-06 23:22:39 UTC
Hi. Because of the enormous amount of music in my iTunes library, I divide the music using playlists in order to target music for day-to-day listening, party listening, etc. I also like to shuffle the songs during playback. The native shuffle feature in ITunes works great but is not useable via Slimserver. Silmserver, however, has its own shuffle feature, but for whatever reason, it has never worked well. Songs from the same album play right after each other, certain albums are heard from more often than others, etc. So, my first request is that Shuffle be fixed, so it truly plays songs in random order. Alternately, one can use SlimServer's Random Mix. The huge drawback to this is that it is only available by genre. BUt when creating "party" playlists, mixed genres are almost always present. To play a random mix from one's entire iTunes library only by genre has a very limited practicality. So my alternate request is to re-configure the Random Mix to be used by playlist rather than genre (or in addition to genre). Thanks for an otherwise great product! Mark McIntyre
Please do not abuse severity settings. The appropriate level is enhancement for any requests on features. Shuffle is not designed to be random random, which is why there is randomPlay. Resetting target to undefined so that it is flagged for review. Until then, consider the use of available plugins for custom playlists (search the forum for Erland's excellent suite of plugins)
I agree, the randomization in shuffle isn't aware enough of artist and album. Mark: if you think that both of these suggestions should get addressed, please open a separate bug for the Random Mix idea.
Unassigned bugs cannot have a priority.
