I think this would work really well if we were to enable the IR...

Jive has a roaming mode that can be enabled. When this is on, it sends a periodic IR signal. If that IR signal is picked up by a player X, a notification is sent to the Jive that sent it that player X should be the selected player.

This isn't a fully cooked idea, since SC doesn't know or care what player Jive has selected. It doesn't make sense to send a notification over and over again for a player that's already selected.

But the root of the idea is a good one--walk into a room and have the Jive switch without having to go to Choose Player.

and i like the idea of using the wifi signal strength instead of the ir.

Wifi signal strength of what? The jive remote? How would that help select a player?

If I had Player A and Player B both in spots that had similar WiFi signal, the remote couldn't make an informed decision based on its signal strength.

I was thinking about looking at the signal strength of the players as seen from jive. But this might not work so well with walls, you might be closer to a player next door. Maybe ir would be the better option.

Also consider wired players. Not sure I see anything but IR for this given current hardware.

I think it might be possible to do this to some extent without needing Jive<->player communication (which wouldn't be possible for wired players anyway).

If I'm in the lounge (with the JHB), I might get a 50% signal on the
Jive remote (based on distance from the access point).

If I'm in the study (where the WAP is), I might get a 80% signal on Jive
remote as I'm close to the WAP.

I can therefore hazard a guess that if the signal strength is 60% I want
to control the lounge player, but if it's 80% I want to control the
study player. That would work whether or not those players were wireless
and whether they were SoftSqueeze, SBs, Transporters, or Squeezeslaves.

I'd have to teach SqueezeCenter that 40%-60% was in the lounge, and 70%-90% was in
the study, of course, but maybe that could even be learned by logging the player
I most often try to control when the wireless coverage is in that band.

What happens when room with playerA has 50-70% strength, and playerB room has 50-70% strength? I know this happens, because that's what I have for two players in my house.

I don't agree that wifi signal strength could work for this.
