It is counting down, but I would normally think that it would be a positive number.  It is negative on both squeezecenter displays (the flyout player as well) and softsqueeze.

This is by design, and has always been the case in order to distinguish between time elapsed and time remaining.

Now on this one:  Interesting, I guess that the one counting up and the other counting down would do it for me, but I suppose if it is paused in the middle it could be a bit vague...
