Description Dan Evans 2007-07-20 10:50:41 UTC
This bug was created due to reports from customers saying their Squeezebox was resetting to the Setup menu. Sometimes in the middle of playing music; sometimes after sitting off all night they'd come to it in the morning and find it on the Setup menu.

Initial tests with firmware 81 show that if while connected to SqueezeNetwork (having not been first connected to SlimServer) you disconnect the ethernet connection, the player reverts to the Setup menu. If you do the same thing while connected to SlimServer the screen simply goes black-- it does not revert to the Setup menu.

I also tested on firmware 72: same behavior

I also tested on firmware 55: different behavior-- disconnecting the connection while connected only to SN goes to a black screen.

Need to test wireless.

Further, if you connect first to SlimServer and THEN connect to SqueezeNetwork the player does NOT revert to the Setup menu if the connection is lost. (via ethernet)

Still need to try via wireless.

What is the behavior you expect/desire? Thanks for any info.

What would be good is have it behave just as it does when connected to SlimServer: if it loses it's connection to the network the display goes black while it tries to reconnect.

Even better would be for the player to display an error message (even briefly) stating the trouble before going black.

I think the important point here is with an interruption in connectivity the player should go dark and continually try to reestablish that connection, not dump back to Setup menu. (this was the behavior in firmware 55)

I hope that makes sense.

I agree with Dan. The behavior of the Squeezebox should be identical whether it is attached to SlimServer or SqueezeNetwork when it looses its network connection. I will attempt to describe the current behavior.

For this example the Squeezebox is connected to SlimServer via Ethernet. If I remove the Ethernet connection the Squeezebox will go dark after a short while. If I attempt to power up the Squeezebox from the remote while disconnected it displays "Problem: Ethernet appears disconnected Please check you network connection. If I reconnect Ethernet the Squeezebox will go back to the state it was in before I disconnected Ethernet. Good.

For this example the Squeezebox is connected to Squeezenetwork via Ethernet immediately following a factory reset. If I remove the Ethernet connection the Squeezebox will return to the "Squeezebox Setup (1 of 2) Set up networking" menu after a short while. It will remain at this menu even after I reconnect the Ethernet thus forcing me to walk through the setup again. Bad.

For this last example the Squeezebox is first connected to SlimServer via Ethernet then switched to Squeezenetwork. Now if I remove the Ethernet connection the Squeezebox will go dark. However if I attempt to power up the Squeezebox from the remote nothing happens on the screen. If I reconnect Ethernet the Squeezebox will go back to the state it was in before I disconnected Ethernet. Strange.

Ideally I would think all the examples should give the same result as the first one. Dan also brought another odd behavior to my attention. If the Squeezebox has had a network connection and you do a factory reset when you select a language and go right the Squeezebox will pause and then do a reboot. After this you select a language and go right it continues normally. The Squeezebox does not do this if it did not have a connection before the factory reset. Maybe this should be a different bug.

Felix, this sounds like something you would work on. Please let me know if I am incorrect.

Another possible manifestation of this bug: if you go through first-time setup and connect first and only to SqueezeNetwork, then your encryption key will not be hidden with asterisks if you return to the setup menu.

To see this:
1. Factory reset a squeezebox 2/3
2. go thru normal setup for wifi with encryption
3. connect to SqueezeNetwork from 'Select a Music Source'
4. Once connected, hold LEFT for 5 secs to return to setup
5. go thru 'Setup networking' again and you will see the encryption key in plain characters-- no security.

If you try these same steps but connect to SlimServer, the encryption key will be hidden with asterisks.

Fixed for next FW version.
Comment 8 Dan Evans 2008-02-01 08:28:18 UTC
What firmware would this be fixed in at this point?
Comment 9 Felix Mueller 2008-02-01 08:36:41 UTC
SB fw 83 and TR fw 33

This bug has recently been fixed in the latest release of SqueezeCenter 7.0.1

Please try that version, if you still see the error, then reopen this bug.
