Doesn't do anything except take up screen real estate.

it's a ui spec, the note indicates a playable item, just as right arrow indicates a descendable item or the M icon represents a mixable item.

Ok, after reading the entry in the wiki I see that it indeed has a purpose.  What about the possibility of removing it while audio is being streamed?  At that point it's certainly redundant and just adds confusion to the display.

The MusicInfo plugin can be configured to display now playing info without the note.
