Bugzilla – Bug 5085
Remember password for more than one wireless network
Last modified: 2010-06-10 15:49:06 UTC
I'd like to more easily move my Squeezebox 2 or Transporter between wireless networks. Right now it's fairly difficult because you have to key in a new WEP or WPA password each time. It would be helpful if it could store passwords for two or more networks, maybe by SSID. I would think the memory needs would be minimal - maybe 100 bytes or so per network? This issue was also mentioned by recently in the forums, although I can't find it at the moment.
This is not a bad idea moving forward. If there is much interest, we may also consider it for the SB3.
The SB2 and SB3 use the same firmware. This was intended for both the Transporter and SB2/3, but there's no way to really specify that in bugzilla.

Let's talk about this for 7.2 or 7.3...
Felix and I looked into this and on the IP3K platforms (SB, TR, SBR, etc...) this would be very difficult to fix.
That's a damned shame. It's certainly very hard to imagine what would make this so difficult.
The way that the IP3K system is structured, it assumes a single set of settings at a very deep level. Add to that the difficulty of making _any_ change to the IP3K given that we're already out of cpu cycles, memory (both RAM and flash), makes this a very risky change.
What's the behavior with the new SqueezePlay based players? Do they remember more than one wifi password? Both the Touch and Radio have a degree of portability not seen before - with Touch containing a server and able to take its music with it on a small USB drive, and Radio with its battery pack. Both are just asking to be moved between wireless networks. Keying in a pass phrase each time shouldn't be necessary.
Hi JJ, I am certainly not trying to be ungrateful for your help in bugzilla, but our preferred approach to bugs like this would be to create a new bug for the SP platform, with a note in the comments about this original bug. This one is probably fine in the new product, but please make a note for the future. Thanks!
Portability certainly does seem to be a driving feature for our products moving forward. We might be able to use that emphasis to justify work on this request.
