Description Mickey Gee 2007-05-12 22:11:16 UTC
Report from team testing translation of SlimServer to Dutch that this screen was not localized to Dutch. Probably an issue for all other languages. Not sure if Component category should be Plugin, so please change if needed.

Not sure which version of 6.5.2 it was seen, but probably somewhere around May 8, 2007.

Screenshot to follow.

Seems to be called "Slim Picks" now as a plugin name. It could be considered a combined proper noun, so not much to translate there. The categories are from the OPML, so it would require localised versions of the opml, or embedded localisation.

targetting all localisation for 6.5.3 so it can be dealt with and we can move on. Anything requiring more complicated changes may get punted.
Comment 3 Chris Owens 2007-05-29 12:50:32 UTC
Dean, we need a judgment. Should we localize the phrase 'Slim Picks'?
Comment 4 Chris Owens 2007-05-29 12:52:20 UTC
Or perhaps we need an additional translated description or subtitle.
Comment 5 Wallace Lai 2007-05-29 15:06:02 UTC
Product names and feature names are routinely not localized. That seems to be general practice of many companies.
On the other hand, I have seen some highly educated, non-English speaking people do not know what to do when they see a feature name in English. The feature is very clear to me by looking at the name, but not to them.

Adding a short localized description of the feature next to the buttons is a good way to fix this. If the description is too long, adding tool tips is good idea also.

We need a ruling, Jim, on whether the string "Slim Picks" should be localized.
Comment 7 Chris Owens 2007-06-21 09:49:25 UTC
Or should be changed to Logi Picks or what.
Comment 8 Chris Owens 2007-06-27 10:55:16 UTC
Ping Jim :)
Comment 9 Chris Owens 2007-07-10 12:40:02 UTC
Ping. Jim, any opinion?
Comment 10 Chris Owens 2007-10-15 17:35:51 UTC
Moving open 6.5.x bugs along to 7.0
Comment 11 Jim Carlton 2007-10-16 12:31:07 UTC
The phrase "Slim Picks" does not need to be localized -- think of it like a product name. However, the items on that menu *should* be localized.
Comment 12 Blackketter Dean 2007-11-25 11:23:51 UTC
We've moved to Staff Picks. We'll need a new icon and updated translations.

Noah: can you attach an updated "Staff Picks" icon that doesn't use words?

Andy: How do we localize the words in the OPML itself?
Comment 13 Andy Grundman 2007-11-25 13:30:12 UTC
The string 'Staff Picks' is localized, but none of the submenus in the OPML are, because it's in a static file. If we moved this to a dynamically generated OPML file on SN, we can do it.
Comment 14 Blackketter Dean 2007-11-25 14:34:01 UTC
Let's do it. Andy: can you set it up to work from a strings file and then we'll get that to the localization team?
Comment 15 Chris Owens 2008-07-23 13:53:05 UTC
Are we still interested in doing this? What is the next step?
