Bugzilla – Bug 4958
After install, SlimTray indicates SlimServer is running. It is not.
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:30:41 UTC
System Info: Dell Optiplex, GX620, Vista SP0 ENU Step: 1. On a clean ghost of Vista SP0 ENU, install SlimServer 6.5.2, build 2007-05-02. 2. After the installation, mouse over the SlimTray. 3. Notice the SlimTray icon indicates SlimServer is running. The tool tip also says SlimServer is running. However, SqueezeBox display is not turned on. 4. Click SlimTray to bring up the menu. 5. Notice the first item is not "Start SlimServer". It is "Open SlimServer". 6. Select the "Open SlimServer" item. 7. Notice IE pops up saying it cannot go to the desired page. Work Around: Wait about 2 to 3 minutes for the SlimTray to update itself. Note: This bug happens on both XP and Vista. It is a more serious problem on Vista. It takes about 2 to 3 minutes for the SlimTray to display the right status. On XP, it takes much less time.
When the installer runs it starts slimserver and then SlimTray. For me this first start of slimserver fails because my firewall brings up a dialog box [Norton]. I suspect it also fails on the standard install. Theory is that SlimTray is checking before the server fails. Wallace - on Vista, what is the status of the service during the 2-3 minutes - is is something other than Stopped?
This is what I found out about the services immediately after SlimServer installation: SlimServer service appears. The status is "Starting". However, SlimServerMySQL does not appear. After about 30 seconds, SlimServerMySQL appears. Status is "Starting". After about 20 seconds, the status of both SlimServer and SlimServerMySQL become "Stopping". After about another 10 seconds, status for SlimServerMySQL disappears. It is still "Stopping" for SlimServer. SlimTray icon still indicates SlimServer is running. Its tool tip still says it is running for about another minute or so.
Dean, This is indeed a bug, I'm seeing it now too.
With Triode's most recent changes this looks to be working! SlimServer actually runs immediately after install on XP and Vista, however the web page isn't automatically opened on Vista.
That is great. Maybe we should mark it as "FIXED".
Verified the fix with SlimServer 6.5.2, build 2007-05-09, on both XP SP2 and Vista. Bug as written is no longer seen. Marking it as "FIXED".
Regression tests confirms what Ross said -- localhost:9000 web page is not popping up on Vista. It maybe a good idea to give more instruction on "Getting Startted" web page for the first time users. As for this fix, it has been verified. Marking it as such.
Closing.
I didn't realise it was supposed to pop up! Is this something that should be there? Also - could you try rebooting a vista box after doing a complete uninstall/install - does it work as normal. The reason I ask is that we've moved creation of a the new directory from the server to the installer in the latest nightly and the permissions it is created with are different. I think this is causing me a problem - we probably need to make the permissions more open.
