Bugzilla – Bug 4821
Transporter with ReadyNAS keeps going into "PAUSE" on it's own
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:31:43 UTC
This is getting a bit frustrating. I am running SlimServer on my Infrant NV and while in "PLAY" mode it goes into "PAUSE" with no input from me. I have about 400 songs in the playlist and have my Transporter synced with my SB3. I have Repeat "ALL" and Shuffle "SONGS" enabled. I have never been looking at the interface when this occurs, but it appears to be somewhat random. Sometimes it will play for 20-30 minutes prior to going into pause, other times maybe after a few hours. But, occaisionally I notice the music is no longer playing and when I check the SlimServer interface on my laptop or PC it shows "PAUSE". As soon as I click on "PLAY" on either remote control or via the SlimServer interface on my PC or laptop it resumes play. How do I keep this from happening? This bug may be similar to #4354, but his goes into "STOP" not "PAUSE". Details: Model: Infrant ReadyNAS NV Firmware: RAIDiator™ v3.01c1-p6 [1.00a034] Memory: 1024 MB [2.0-2-2-6] RAIDar version: 3.01c1-p1 SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11221 - Linux - EN - utf8 Server IP address: 192.168.1.54 Perl Version: 5.8.8 sparc-linux MySQL Version: 5.0.24a-Debian_3.infrant1 Both my Transporter and SB3 are connected via G WIFI using WPA-PSK with TKIP. When I place my laptop near either the TP or SB3, Netstumbler reports a very strong and clean WIFI signal. SNR = 71, Signal+ = -27, SNR+ = 73 All of my music files are FLAC (ripped from my CDs using EAC/secure & AccurateRip, compression level eight) and kept in the standard Infrant /c/media/Music folder. Each CD is in it's own folder with the corresponding songs contained in that folder. I can forward any other information you may need.
Tim, have you noticed this "PAUSE" behavior when the players are not synced? I was also wondering what firmware is on the players. Chris, do we have a ReadyNAS NV available to attempt to reproduce this behaviour?
I just unsynced my players and will let you know what happens. The TP shows FW=27 with a 89% signal strength, and my SB3 is FW=72 with a signal of 85%. FYI, last night it went into pause at about 9-9:30. I hit Play on the remote prior to going to bed and the next time it paused was somewhere between 1:30 and 2:30 pm today. Not sure exactly because I was out walking the dogs. I thnk this is the longest it has gone, typically between and hour and 3-4 hours. Tim If you need any logs or anything else just let me know which ones to send.
Update: After having unsynced my players over 20 hours ago, the SB3 have been running flawlessly. The TP has stopped playing twice. Both times when I looked at the web interface on my laptop, the PLAY icon was highlighted but the TP was definitely not playing, it appeared either paused or stopped, no sound, VUs fixed at 0 and the timer was not counting down.. To get it to start I had to click on STOP then PLAY. I just restarted it for the second time but prior to doing so I unplugged it, let it sit for a minute then plugged it in again. Playing normally right now. Both my SB3 and TP are playing songs (REPEAT ALL mode) from the same playlist.
There is a ReadyNAS in my old cubicle for QA use, Steven. Feel free to grab it.
Update & Correction: "Both times when I looked at the web interface on my laptop, the PLAY icon was highlighted but the TP was definitely not playing, it appeared either paused or stopped, no sound, VUs fixed at 0 and the timer was not counting down." Above should have said VU meters fixed at -20. Also, I just got home from running errands, SB3 still playing normally and TP stopped again. SS interface says "PLAY" but same symptoms as above. This time I clicked the play button on the TP and it began playing immediately. Will try to time how long until the next stoppage.
I was just about to suggest trying a newer firmware that is available with the nightly, but I am not sure of an easy way to do that with the ReadyNAS. I know the newer firmware is available on Squeezenetwork, but I suspect SlimServer will downgrade the firmware when connected back to the ReadyNAS. Chris, ideas?
I have just updated our ReadyNAS NV and will be setting up a playlist to run over the weekend. Tim, I am beginning to think that this behavior may be an indicator of network health issues. I suggest you set up a Server & Network Health test. More information can be found here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?DiagnosingPerformanceIssues
Thanks for the help. I am on the road with work, so the first chance I will have to setup the network health monitor will be on Monday. The behaviors I listed above are continuing as of this morning. My playlist is about 450 FLAC songs compression level 8. Both players are playing from this list independantly. One quick question; If I were to temporarily put SS on my PC and upgrade the FW on both of my players with the latest daily and then went back to using SS on the NV, would it work OK with the Infrant SS version or would that SS force the FW to revert back to the one inside of the Infrant NV? Would the latest dialy FW work OK this way? Thanks!
The SS on the NV will force the firmware on the players to match the firmware that came with that SS. So connecting the players temporarily to another server to load different firmware would not work. Besides I am less inclined to think that this is a firmware issue at this time. Hopefully the Server & Network Health test will reveal something before we move on to trying a different sever.
I just got back home tonight and looked for the network test plugin and could not find it. Does the Infrant version of SS have this plugin? Under "Plugins" on the main SS screen, I only see "Switch to SqueezeNetwork". Can this be downloaded separately somehow? Thanks! BTW, my SB3 ran non-stop for the entire three days I was gone but the TP was paused. I have no idea how long the TP was paused though, just in the condition mentioned above.
Tim, you get to the Server & Network Health plugin from the SlimServer home page under Help. More information is in the link from Comment #7. However I was able to reproduce the behavior you describe by leaving the Transporter playing over the weekend. Unfortunately the Server & Network Health plugin did not reveal any problems what so ever. I am going to leave the transporter playing overnight with d_playlist, d_stream, d_source and d_proto enabled in Debugging in hopes that the log may reveal something. Transporter Version: 27 SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11221 - Linux - EN - utf8 Server IP address: 172.16.0.8 Perl Version: 5.8.8 sparc-linux MySQL Version: 5.0.24a-Debian_3.infrant1
Created attachment 1844 [details] Transporter and ReadyNAS NV log Dan, I can't tell if this is a SlimServer or Transporter firmware issue. Do you see anything in the log that may indicate if this should be assigned to you or Richard? I was going to run the test again tonight with a Squeezebox to make sure the behavior is isolated to the Transporter.
Are there any of my logs thta you would liek me to forward to try to help? I ran the network health thing but am not an expert at interpreting the results. Tim
I ran the same test with a Squeezebox in place of the Transporter overnight and the Squeezebox is still happily playing. So it looks like this behavior is specific to the Transporter. Tim, thanks for the offer, since I can reproduce the behavior I don't think I need any additional information from you at the moment. Dan, I am going to assign this one to you and cc Richard.
I just became aware that Infrant has an addon called "Disable_SlimServer_FW_Check.bin" that forces SlimServer on the ReadyNAS to not upgrade/downgrade the existing FW on a users connected SqueezeBox/TP. Cool! If I were to upgrade the FW on both of my players with the latest daily (using my PC) and then went back to using SS on the NV, would this cause any issues or would it work OK? The SS version on my NV is: 6.5.1 - 11221 - Linux - EN - utf8. The FW version currently on my TP=27 and my SB3=72.
I installed the Infrant AddOn, "Disable_SlimServer_FW_Check.bin" I also temporarily installed SS (latest daily) on my laptop and updated the FW on both of my players. FW on players is now: TP=29 SB3=80 When I reconnected the players to SS on my Infrant NV it did not force FW update and all seems to function normally. I rebuilt the same playlist (~450 FLAC files) I was using earlier and have the TP running in repeat all + shuffle songs mode once again. It's only been up for 10 minutes, but I will report back if it once again goes into uncommanded "pause" mode.
Well it was working fine when I went to bed last night but when I got up the TP was not playing, it had stopped at song #98 in the playlist. When I opened up SS it shows that the TP is still in "play". One quick click of the play button on the remote control and the VU meters sprang back to life. So, newest FW did not appear to make any difference. One thought, disk spindown is enabled on my NV, could that be an issue?
Any updates on this? As an experiment I ran all 3 of my SD boxes (two SB3s and a TP) from both different and the exact same playlists and they ran for >24 hours without going into pause. I then synced my TP with first one and then the other SB3 and tried again. Either or both the TP or SB3 would go into pause on their own routinely.
It would be ideal if a developer could look at this for the 6.5.2 release.
Hi Justin, Any help you could provide on this bug would be welcome. Dan Sully is no longer with us, but Dean and I should be able to help from this side.
Hmm, I wouldn't even know where to begin on this one. Tim, are you running the SlimServer version that came with RAIDiator 3.01c1-p6? If so, that one is a pre-release 6.5.1, and you can try installing the addon for 6.5.1 final (marked as SlimServer 6.5.1.2) from http://www.infrant.com/wiki/index.php/Add-Ons .
I am running the latest SS version from Infrant. Here is all of that information once again: Model: Infrant ReadyNAS NV Firmware: RAIDiator™ v3.01c1-p6 [1.00a034] Memory: 1024 MB [2.0-2-2-6] RAIDar version: 3.01c1-p6 SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11221 - Linux - EN - utf8 (from Perl Version: 5.8.8 sparc-linux MySQL Version: 5.0.24a-Debian_3.infrant1 Transporter FW version = 31 Both SB3 FW version = 81 All 3 devices show a WIFI signal strength of >88% All 3 are connected via G WIFI using WPA-PSK with TKIP When I place my laptop near any of my players Netstumbler reports: SNR = 63, Signal+ = -28, SNR+ = 72 If I run all 3 SD devices independantly they will run until I shut them off or change play settings, just like they are designed to do. I have had them run for a week straight with no issues. The BUG: When either (or both) of my SB3s are synced with the TP, all synced players will randomly go into "PAUSE" mode simultaneously with no input from me. The SS interface will either show PAUSE or PLAY but the music is definitley not streaming (VU meters fixed full left). A click of a remote control PLAY button (or PLAY in the SS program) is all it takes to get it started again. This can happen within 1 minute of starting PLAY or maybe it takes a few hours but it ALWAYS goes into PAUSE eventually. I hope I described it accurately enough.
We can work with Infrant to come out with an interim build if we need to, since 6.5.2 release is nearly upon us.
A considerable amount of work has been done for 7.0 on sync and playback issues, including Transporter firmware updates. We're communicating with Infrant regarding their plans for releasing 7.0 to their users.
Matt will soon have a 7.0 build for the Infrant available for testing.
Matt, please point this back to QA to retest once the 7.0 on ReadyNAS build is ready.
This isn't a Transporter firmware bug, though it apparently affects Transporter.
Matt: how we doing on 7.0 on ReadyNAS?
*** Bug 6446 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Unfortunately we're still stuck getting 7.0 working on a ReadyNAS unit. The guys over at Infrant/NetGear were able to get it running on their own, but we're having a hard time getting a full build that includes all of the libraries automatically ... without custom-tweaking. I'm still waiting for a test unit from NetGear to continue working on this issue.
Justin: anything you can do to help us along here?
Yep, that's my first order of business once my work is done for ReadyNAS Duo. Hopefully this week I'll wrap that up and move on to SqueezeCenter.
Great! Thanks. -dean
Marking this down as the 7.0 release on ReadyNAS will be a little after 7.0 on Mac/Win/Linux
I'll test this out tonight with my NV+ and transporter... I'll leave it playing non stop and see if it ever pauses.
After 18+ hours of testing, I cannot reproduce this bug with Infrant's 4.0 C1-P2 OS and our SC 7.0 code. Closing bug.
This bug is being closed since it was resolved for a version which is now released! Please download the new version of SqueezeCenter (formerly SlimServer) at http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html If you are still seeing this bug, please re-open it and we will consider it for a future release.
