Description Dan Evans 2007-02-07 16:56:40 UTC
Some customers are running into a problem where they cannot open the Slimserver web interface on Windows Vista. Slimserver is clearly running, as their Squeezebox is functioning and playing their music.

Shutting down Windows Firewall has no effect. Trying Firefox also does not work.
Comment 1 Jeremy Grigg 2007-03-03 00:16:36 UTC
Taskbar icon tooltip stays on "SlimServer Starting", but never proceeds further. Attempts to obtain a SlimServer via "http://localhost:9000" and "http://127.0.0.1:9000" yield a blank page, with the occasional Firefox Tab Header of "GIF file: 320x320".

Interestingly, I have had SlimServer running in the past on my Vista installation. It has just stopped working in the last few days, suggesting some form of install conflict. I do not recall installing any new applications or services since this problem began, however.

Wallace, 20070315: Just noticed that this bug is for release 6.5.1. Bug# 4825 is for release 6.5.2. This problem has been resolved on SlimServer 6.5.2, build 20070315.

Thank you to vdorta in the forums for suggesting what seems to be a functional workaround for this issue. I'll be keeping a close eye on this bug with the nightly builds.

Workaround: After installing SlimServer 6.5.2 on Vista simply open services.msc, set both services SlimServer and SlimServerMySQL as startup type automatic, reboot, start SlimServer and the web interface should be working.

Just wanted to add our latest findings about this bug.

The workaround from vdorta in comment 5 is great, and works for most users. However, on some machines there's still a problem.

Ro reiterate, if you look in task manager, slim and mysql are both running. Indeed, if you connect a squeezebox it works fine. It's just the web ui with the problem. And the problem is NOT that the web browser can't connect and eventually gives a 404 (not found) message. It just displays a blank (white) page.

This happens on any web browser, not just IE. If you right-click and select 'view source' you see some interesting html. There are a few tags and information, like perhaps it's the first 2K of a template, (including a <title> tag, so the window title gets set to 'Slimserver') but that's all.

It's almost like Slimserver starts building the page, can't finish, gives up, and serves the incomplete page to the browser anyway. The next step is to run slim from the command line with d_source and d_html debugging to see if they show anything interesting.

I think this is improved with changes 11828 and 11852 - these should allow the server to start in the cases when "start automatically" is not selected at install time.

Looks to be working consistently for me now, thanks Triode! I'm marking this as works for me, if anyone is still seeing this issue please update to the latest nightly build and let us know if it's still occurring.

when i try to open this url, i just get a blank screen.

I see below the advice

"After installing SlimServer 6.5.2 on Vista simply open
services.msc, set both services SlimServer and SlimServerMySQL as startup type
automatic, reboot, start SlimServer and the web interface should be working. "

Where is services.msc?
Comment 10 Ross Levine 2007-06-04 11:39:40 UTC
If you click on start, there is a small menu where you can type, this was formerly known as the run command line. You can type services.msc and there and hit enter.
Comment 11 Dan Evans 2007-06-04 13:03:19 UTC
The "Run" option does not appear in Vista anymore by default. You can find the Services setting either by going to Control Panels > Administrative Tools > Services, or you can go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and enter "services.msc" there and hit Enter.
