Some ALAC files choke with the current version of alac bundled with slimserver. See:

This can easily be fixed by upgrading to the latest version of alac and dropping it into the Slimserver binaries directory:

http://craz.net/programs/itunes/alac.html

However, this latest version should be bundled as standard with Slimserver---an old version that doesn't work is stilll being used.
