Bugzilla – Bug 4617
Rhapsody "Request Forbidden" error
Last modified: 2007-01-10 10:30:22 UTC
I just downloaded an album ("Sticky Fingers") from Rhapsody to my server. The album will not play over the Squeezebox. I am getting "Rhapsody Request Forbidden" on the screen of the Squeezebox. The SlimServer web interface shows the tracks as ready to play, and "Brown Sugar" appears on the Squeezebox screen, along with "Stopped 1 of 10". So it sees the tracks, it simply will not play them. I have encountered other downloaded Rhapsody music (not freshly downloaded, but having been on my system a while) that will not play and offers up the same "Forbidden" message. I am marking this bug as "critical" since it keeps you from playing the music. I just loaded up last night's nightly and the behavior persists.
Further info on this one. It appears that it is possible with Rhapsody to "download" full albums, even if some tracks on the album are not authorized for download, but rather for 30 second preview only. This is the case with Sticky Fingers. Trying to play the album causes errors, evidently because the "30 second preview" tracks do not actually download, but SlimServer doesn't know that, and just gives an error when you try to play them. I would suggest that tracks that cannot be played should not show up in the SlimServer interface. But at least I understand the problem now. In addition, I think this problem continues to exist for other files that are, in fact, authorized for full download, as I still have Rhapsody tracks on my system that I cannot play but show as downloaded and ready to play.
A little more . . . At least two albums that I had previously downloaded are still sitting on my server's hard disk. They will play through the Rhapsody interface on that machine. They will _not_, however, play over SlimServer/Squeezebox. What these two albums have in common seems to be that they are no longer available for download on Rhapsody. One, Bruce Springsteen - Live 1975-1995, is now marked for sale only on Rhapsody, the other, Yngwie Malmsteen - The Best of '90-'99, seems to have vanished off of Rhapsody completely. Is it possible that the method Slim Devices is using for playing Rhapsody tracks does some kind of check back to the Rhapsody server (from within Rhapsody, I mean, as in perhaps Rhapsody is doing this on its own) to make sure the album is still available and, if not, refuses to play it, while at the same time the local Rhapsody player simply sees the tracks and plays them?
This is an issue with the Rhapsody software. When playing Rhapsody tracks over UPnP, it always streams the audio from the internet and does not use your local downloaded files. So if a file is changed within Rhapsody to no longer allow streaming, you'll get this error message.
