Description Dan Evans 2006-12-13 12:10:33 UTC
With 6.5.1 installed, if you double-click the SlimServer desktop icon while Slimserver is already running, you get the following error message:

"Starting SlimServer Failed. Please see the Event Viewer & Contact Support."

In fact, Slimserver is STILL running, but it just doesn't open the web browser like it used to.

The Event Viewer text is: CreateService failed: The specified service already exists.

Right-clicking Slimtray and selecting "Open Slimserver" still works fine.
Comment 1 Chris Owens 2007-02-12 14:51:20 UTC
So the desktop icon runs "slimtray.exe --start"

I don't know if there is any work planned for slimtray for the 7.0 release, but I think the correct solution to this bug may be to have slimtray respond to that by launching the web browser.

Error message

I also see this with the SlimServer start menu icon and the Quick Launch icon and is easily reproduced with the nightly.

Dean, can this be addressed before 6.5.2?
Comment 3 Spies Steven 2007-05-09 12:05:04 UTC
Perhaps we could change the wording of the error message to something more meaningful if it cannot be fixed before 6.5.2?
Comment 4 Adrian Smith 2007-05-09 15:05:06 UTC
I think the actual problem here is causing slimtray to run with --start while it is already running and the server is also running. Will try and trap this case.
Comment 5 Adrian Smith 2007-05-09 15:54:01 UTC
Please try 11944 or later. Note that on Vista this won't work if the SlimTray which is already running is running as admin [if started by installer or started manually as admin] and desktop icon is run as a user.
Comment 6 Spies Steven 2007-05-10 11:53:45 UTC
This is greatly improved in todays nightly if not fixed outright. Thanks!
Comment 7 Spies Steven 2007-05-10 13:02:04 UTC
I still get this error message if I do the following:
While SlimServer is running, select stop SlimServer form SlimTray.
Once selected, double click desktop icon.
Notice error message.
This only seems to happen until SlimServer has completely stopped.

Do we have the ability to change the wording of the error message to something more meaningful if it cannot be removed completely?

I also noticed if one selects to View Getting Started.html during install, SlimSever will open in the same browser window moments later without giving the user a chance to read the document. Maybe this should be its own bug.

Ping
Comment 9 Spies Steven 2007-05-10 14:45:21 UTC
If we were to change the wording of this error message, does anyone have a suggestion of how it should read?
Comment 10 Adrian Smith 2007-05-10 14:47:14 UTC
Same browser window - not sure we can do anything about this other than not open a browser window from SlimTray at install. I note that with Firefox on Vista it always opens in a new tab.

Do we want to take opening the browser window out?
Comment 11 Adrian Smith 2007-05-10 15:12:07 UTC
Doesn't look like I can reliably check server state and give two forms of error message (one for currently stopping try again later and one for there is definately a problem). So I suggest we tone down the text in the current strings.
Comment 12 Dan Evans 2007-05-10 17:09:15 UTC
One suggestion might be: "Opening Slimserver failed. This can happen while the server is still starting or shutting down. Wait a moment and try again. If it continues to fail, contact support at support@slimdevices.com"
Comment 13 Adrian Smith 2007-05-15 15:24:46 UTC
Going with text proposed by Dean: "SlimServer would not open. SlimServer may be starting or stopping. Please wait a minute and try again."
Comment 14 KDF 2007-05-15 22:59:22 UTC
new string was change 12021, needs localising. Join in michael. We need to offset all of these @slimdevices addys, anyway :)
Comment 15 Michael Herger 2007-05-15 23:32:25 UTC
The string's been sent to the translators some 12 hours ago ;-)
Comment 16 Chris Owens 2007-05-17 14:13:56 UTC
The remaining bug (that we need a friendlier string) is no longer 'major'.
Comment 17 Michael Herger 2007-05-17 21:56:57 UTC
Still waiting for the translations - I wonder if the translators are aware of Eric's vacation.
Comment 18 KDF 2007-05-18 13:51:29 UTC
other languages will have to wait for 6.5.3.
Comment 19 Chris Owens 2007-05-29 12:40:43 UTC
Did we ever get this string back?
Comment 20 Michael Herger 2007-05-29 12:58:43 UTC
I didn't...
Comment 21 Chris Owens 2007-05-29 17:28:01 UTC
Mickey says he'll check with them.
Comment 22 Andy Grundman 2007-07-12 05:48:05 UTC
Moving 6.5.3 target bugs to 6.5.4.
Comment 23 Chris Owens 2007-10-15 17:34:25 UTC
Ping Mickey
Comment 24 Michael Herger 2007-12-21 06:58:03 UTC
Hey, we still don't have updated translations... Punt post 7.0 for next localization update. I will remove the outdated localizations once 7.0 is released.
Comment 25 Michael Herger 2008-04-01 04:32:20 UTC
