I'm having an occasional problem with my slimserver.

Some Q10 OGGs playback with a lot of static. It seems random, but one song that consistently plays back badly is Cartman's rendition of Come Sail Away. I ALWAYS get a lot of static on this song.

Actually, ALMOST always. If it is the first song I play after turning on the slimserver, it plays fine. (Just checked this morning.) But after 3-4 MP3s or FLACs, then nearly all Q10 OGGs play back with skips and static.

I don't think it's a problem with the file, as it plays back just fine thru amarok.

Q10 OGG that consistently plays back badly

I've been playing a mix of MP3s and this track for a couple days on one of my test SB3s and can't seem to get any crackling.

Is there anything special about the MP3s you listen to? Are they encoded with LAME or something else? What bit rate?
Comment 4 John Jablonski 2006-12-13 13:55:01 UTC
All my MP3s are from emusic.com, and the Q10 OGGs are from allofmp3.com, so I don't what they use to encode. MP3s are 192k bitrate. Everything I rip is FLAC, using drag-n-drop in konqueror.

This weekend I had to shut the thing off because all the Q10s were cracking so badly. Q8s seem OK. How much quality do I lose if I convert all my Q10s to Q8? I know I'll lose something, but Q10s nearly lossless isn't it?

I think this issue came up during the development of the current stable server version. No idea when it started tho. For various reasons, I just never had time to file a bug report. I also was figuring it'd be fixed with the final release. At the time, I was switching from gentoo to kubuntu, and started using unstable because of the DEB file.

Is the problem likely in the server or in the player itself? ie: would a fresh install of the server do any good? Or is there a reset to as-shipped config on the player?

Since OGG decoding now occurs on the Squeezebox, my guess would be that it is a firmware issue. I'll continue to have a look here. I'm not going to guess if you can hear the difference between Q8 and Q10, but I know we definitely have customers that can.

The firmware files are packaged with the Slimserver application, though, so if you were to go back to a previous slimserver version and find a place where the problem doesn't happen, that would definitely help us find the bug.

If you're interested in doing that, previous slimserver versions are available from http://slimdevices.com/downloads/

yeah, me probably not so much. :)

So if I go back to 6.3.1...then what? Do a firmware update on the squeezebox? Which would actually downgrade the firmware?

I'll try and give it a shot, but I have two kids, so don't expect an overnight response. :-)

You wouldn't happen to know of an ubuntu DEB for 6.3.1 would you?

Old Slimserver versions are available here http://slimdevices.com/downloads/

Also note fw75 will be out shortly and it fixes a number of issues (although none specifically with OGG). It might also be worth a try.

I still haven't been able to repro this here.

The bitrate is very high. This isn't a limit of our decoder, but if your network is congested it might be causing this kind of symptom. If there are many devices on your network, it might be an interesting test to try unplugging some of them temporarily to see if easing congestion cures the symptom.

Hello again.

Well, I had some issues with the upgrade from 6.5.0 to 6.5.1. So I purged the the mucked up 6.5.1 install, installed 6.5.0 again, then (on advice from a forum posted), purged 6.5.0, and did a fresh install of 6.5.1.

Using the default settings of 6.5.1, the previously attached Q10 OGG is, right at this very moment, playing perfectly.

So....maybe with all the incremental beta upgrades, something got messed up? And a fresh install removed whatever was messed up? Either in the server of the firmware. Of course, I have no way of knowing if just an upgrade to 6.5.1 would have fixed the problem, as the upgrade completely hosed my slimserver installation.

Regardless, I've had a playlist going constantly for about 4 days now, and the Q10 OGG is still playing back just fine.

So I guess consider this bug closed.

thanks,

Well, I don't have a flag for 'works for you now' so I'll mark it as 'works for me'. Thanks for filing the bug, though. Customer bug reports are critical to our efforts!
