Description Anthony Skipper 2006-11-06 14:55:39 UTC
Following change of WRT54G from v1 to V7.

SB3 connects and finds SSID, but cannot get DHCP to assign IP address.

I see that 64 as current build. Cannot find any link to this specific config, other that I expect tit is all to do with Router. Note that 3 other PCs can connect to this router without problem.
Comment 1 KDF 2006-11-06 17:55:55 UTC
and does static ip fail as well? Please use that asa a workaround if it works, and we can lower the overlay alarmist severity rating.
Comment 2 Anthony Skipper 2006-11-07 11:15:54 UTC
Setup IP manually. 192.168.1.249, DNS, Gateway etc. Tries to connect to slim server, then display goes blank. Note that Slim Server is v6.5.0, which I believe is latest build.

Severity set to blocker, because it describes the problem. That is the SB3 cannot connect.

As mentioned on the bugzilla main page (in the "before you begin note") You can try the latest nightly build here:
http://www.slimdevices.com/dev_nightly.html

That has FW67.

1. I installed SlimServer 7.0.1.
Still no sign of SB3 with static IP.

2. Then plugged SB3 direct to WRT54G.
   Set to network on Ethernet.
   Obtained DHCP IP address.
Would not connect to SlimServer, would connect to SqueezeNetwork.
Turned Firewall off on PC, but no good.

3. Then tried back to wireless to see if could get SqueezeNetwork with static IP.
   No good.

Question is how do I install Firmware to SB3 if SB3 cannot be seen by Slimserver?

Note that all went bad after my Linksys WRT54G V1 failed and I replaced it with WRT54G V7. From my search of the net it seems not just me having this problem. Logged with you because I read on your site that as routers assumed to work then must be SB3. Note that I have 2 PCs on network and they will happily connect to Internet and share files. Is this some problem with your SB3 working with Linksys router?
Comment 6 KDF 2006-11-07 14:47:23 UTC
1. work with the STABLE build (6.5.1)
2. if you can't connect wired, that is something you would contact support@slimdevices about as that is a support problem NOT a bug.

Hi.

1. Installed 6.5.1.

2. Now can connect direct wired through WRT54G to slim server.
Auto updated to FW67 on SB3.
   All works OK wired.

3. Wireless = same problem. No DHCP.
No connection to SlimServer when static IP entered.

I notice that http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?action=diff&page_name=RouterStatus&revision_id=-1
refers to earlier compatibility problems with routers. I notice that a problem with Linksys WRT54G V4 is mentioned.

Any guidance apart from buying new router would be gratefully accepted.
(Thanks for looking at this. I am off to bed now. 23:50 in UK)

Would you please give me an update on my problem.

Thanks

Hi, Anthony

Just FYI, KDF is a member of our community, not a paid staff member.

The 'Blocker' severity describes a bug that is preventing testing or development, as described if you click the word 'Severity' above.

Typically, unless you're aware of a number of customers experiencing this problem, I prefer to have users contact our customer support team first. They're really quite skilled at fixing problems, and aren't just flunkies reading from scripts in an underheated call center. The address is support@slimdevices.com.

Since you've filed a bug, members of our community and I will also try to help you here, but our priorities are somewhat different than the customer support group.

Prior to the release of Firmware 48, there were a large number of router incompatibilities. At that time we hired a new firmware programmer, and those issues have been largely resolved. You'll note the RouterStatus page on our wiki that you quoted has very few issues with recent firmware versions.

The information that other PCs can connect to the router is good. Thanks.

What security settings are you using on the router? WEP64 or 128? WPA1 or 2?

Are you using the DHCP server built in to the router, or do you have another machine on your network acting as DHCP server? I assume from your description that the exact steps you are following are something like:

1) Pressing right on 'Set up networking'
2) Pressing right on 'Connect to a wireless network'
3) Pressing right on the appropriate region (I'm guessing 'Europe' from your email address).
4) Selecting your wireless network name from the list (if you have SSID enabled on your router).
5) Selecting the appropriate encryption setting to correspond to your router.
6) Entering the correct password. Verify you see a countdown begin and then stop when the SB3 has connected to the wireless network.
7) Pressing right on 'Obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP)'.

After that point, if I understand you correctly, that countdown timer runs out, after which the SB3 will offer to self-assign an IP address.

Is that correct?

Subject: RE: WRT54G V7 no DHCP with SB3 Firmware 64

Hi

Thanks for putting me right on the support. I will raise a call with
Support, but do think that this is a bug. Am I right to keep looking at
this bug page, i.e. would the problem bne referred to the firmware developer
employed by Slim Devices?

In answer to your questions:
1. DHCP from WRT54GV7 router.
Note that this works OK for wireless PCs, and worked OK for SB3 when
hardwired
2. Security is WEP(64). I know it is insecure and one day will stick my
head in a manual for WPA-....
3. The sequence that you have described is just how I see it.

Regards

Tony

Well, I can't reproduce this with my v5, so I'll order a new one and hope for a V7. What firmware version do you have on the router? This is usually displayed up in the corner of the router configuration page, or on a 'Current settings' page.

This information will help me set mine up identically when it arrives.
Comment 12 Anthony Skipper 2006-11-14 11:28:41 UTC
Hi Chris

WRT54G firmware version 7.00.1 = latest from the LINKSYS site.

Thanks
Comment 13 Chris Owens 2006-11-15 11:37:28 UTC
Ah then but what version of the WRT54G itself do you have? It's on the bottom of the unit and will say 'WRT54G v2.2' or something like that? There are considerable differences between hardware revisions of this product.

The one I ordered turns out to be a hardware version 6 and the latest firmware available for it is 1.01. Looking at Linksys's firmware downloads page, it doesn't look like there is a hardware version 7.0.

Are you sure that's what it says on the bottom of the unit? I would like to work with our firmware developer and fix your problem, but I can't seem to reproduce it with the hardware I have purchased.

Subject: RE: WRT54G V7 no DHCP with SB3 Firmware 64

Hi Chris

Attached is a photo of the label on base of router showing v7. Note that
you need to go to the UK site (www uk.linksys.com) to see downloads for V7
router.

But, I do see that the V6 router is as high as you go on the US site. Could
Linksys have been carrying out experiments on the British consumers that
cause our Squeezeboxes not to work? That aside, the Linksys router does
work without problem with all other wireless devices in the house.

Not sure what to do now? I could get a list of compatible routers. But,
this could cause you a problem. Note that SB3 was marked as best buy this
month on
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/97696/slim-devices-squeezebox-3-wireless.html?se
archString=squeezebox, which could start similar problems for anyone who has
bought a WRT54G V7 router.

Perhaps you could buy one from www.amazon.co.uk. Let me know what you
suggest. Perhaps you could place a call to Linksys and ask them to supply a
V7 router.

Let me know what to do. i.e. have you exhausted investigation. In which
case I will need to return SqueezeBox. Or, that you will try to locate a V7
WRT54G.

Kind regards

Tony

Tony,

I now have a couple of WRT54G V7 to use for testing, and they seem to be working fine with WPA2 and DHCP. What wireless encryption options were you using when the Squeezebox could not connect?

Thanks,
Richard
