Here's the problem: you're a new (or not so new) user in the web UI, and you are trying to find a setting or command. Where the heck is it? You're sure it was there before, but you flick through the server or player settings (minimum 2 click for each change, plus scrolling time) and can't find it anywhere. Wouldn't it be great if there was a better way?

My first thought on this was to create an index. So after a little chat in the forums at http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28086 I created this: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?CommandIndex

However this has several problems - its only in English, its hard to maintain, and worst of all its a long way from the web UI (how do you know to go and look in the wiki?).

Enter Fred (thanks, Fred) who in the forum made this suggestion:

"Another idea might be something similar to the OS X spotlight mechanism... It does index the terms in the preferences (so if you search, say, brightness, it finds "Display preferences")... What I am saying is we could have the server itself propose a search option for the setting texts. We'd get translation as a benefit. Practically, maybe we need to add an invisible "tag" or "keyword" to the data for searching."

This sounds like a much better idea. A permanently available search facility that would find keywords in the settings pages including the descriptive textx, and lead you to the various places where this term appears.

Note that this is distantly related to bug https://bugs-archive.lyrion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2487, although NOT the same: that request is about making it easier to find out what *this* command does, whereas this request is about finding out *where* that command is.

For extra credit, have the search mechanism also tell you about corresponding options in the player UI.

maybe similar to livesearch, where results fill the div as text is entered. Maybe this could be the entire settings ui, type in a keyword or two and you get all the related settings. no pages, no pulldown. could then have a url scheme where keywords can be supplied as url params so that links to specific setting groups can still exist for most common settings.

Unassigned bugs cannot have a priority.
