The infrant this has been tested on is at 10.0.3.24...

cc'ing Justin at Infrant.

Have you heard the same, Justin? Any ideas how we could perk it up some?
Comment 3 Justin Maggard 2006-10-04 12:01:04 UTC
I haven't heard of it being much slower than 6.3.x. I don't believe there any simple tweaks that will make it run faster. Both perl and mysql use floating point calculations quite a bit (perl uses FP registers even without FP calculations), and our CPU doesn't have an FPU, so it all has to be emulated. The more perl modules there are, the slower it gets.

Maybe we should ditch some of the heavier plugins and put those in the plugin pack? (Rhapsody comes to mind...)
Comment 5 Justin Maggard 2006-10-09 16:47:19 UTC
That may help, but we disable most of the unnecessary plugins by default anyway. Our default config file contains: disabledplugins:
  - CLI
  - Health::Plugin
  - MusicMagic::Plugin
  - Podcast::Plugin
  - SlimTris
  - Snow
  - Rhapsody::Plugin
  - PreventStandby::Plugin
  - xPL
  - iTunes

Would it help to move the actual files for some of these into the plugin pack?

cc'ing Dean, who often has answers, although I don't think the location of the files would appreciably affect the speed of the server.

Justin: is there any way we can get a shell on one of these guys so we can do some performance testing. I realize that the CPU is limited, but I suspect that there's room for optimization.

This really is a painful issue (I'm just a consumer here, no idea what it would take, no bright ideas) but I'm considering selling my slimboxes and moving to Sonos because it has no latency.

Guys,

Since I moved to Radiator Version 3.01c1p4 running on my RadyNAS with the xtra pluginpack i have exceedingly good performance at my device(s), the http UI at :9000 is a little sluggish using the default skin, but i started to use moose, so not so concerned - switching to the handheld skin is better.

- I have 1gb in my readyNAS.
- have all but uPnP server turned on
- 2x Squeeze 3
- 2x puppylinux running softsqueeze (on older Pentium 3's in kids rooms)

Only thing i have done since p4 upgrade is to move my iTunes XML where the slim can see it. (was in XP mediacenter pc)

We often have 3-4 devices streaming and all is good.

We have some plans to work on this in the future.
