Description Brian Guttridge 2006-09-22 09:34:36 UTC
If the music library folder is left blank in the basic settings (as instructed) and the itunes music folder and the location of itunes playlists are correctly assigned in the itunes setup then the scan does not detect the itunes music. The itunes play lists are imported but they are empty.
Comment 1 KDF 2006-09-22 10:10:53 UTC
you shouldn't have to set the itunes folder or the playlist locations at any point on a windows system.
make sure that you have the "use itunes" option on the basic settings page, and that it is selected. That should be all that is needed for a standard windows install.

Hi

My itunes music folder is on a network drive.

Everything was working fine with SlimServer_v6.3.1

music on a network drive may require that you set slimserver service to run as a user. If you did this for 6.3.1, it will not have carried over to 6.5.0

Thanks I have not done any thing differently for 6.3.1 as for 6.5.0. I can use 6.3.1 exactly as it says in the instructions but for 6.5.0 it doesn't find the music in the itunes folder and the itunes play lists are emtpy. The only way i can get the music is to put the link to the drive on the main music library link on the basic settings page instead of the itunes page. Then it works but the itunes playlists are still without content. I nottice when i did set up 6.5.0 as instructed it did find a few mp3 files that were in my itunes folder so perhaps the link is working but it is just not finding the applelossless files. I hope this helps. I am running 6.3.1 with no problems but its gonna be a shame if I can never use newer versions of the software. I am convinced you have bug in there. I am using exactly the same settings which ever version I use.

Brian,

Could you please go to server settings -> iTunes, and please specify the iTunes music folder as well as iTunes music library.xml file locations. I understand that SlimServer says you don't need to specify those fields if you enabled 'use iTunes', however I'd like you to try specifying these anyhow. Then please try a clear and rescan, do your playlists appear to be populated as they should?

I have been doing what you say:

My music is stored as apple lossless.

Clear and Rescan the music folder does not find the music in my iTunes folder. It
finds my iTunes playlists but they are empty.

My settings are:

Main settings page

Music folder left: blank

Itunes: Use iTunes

Itunes settings page

iTunes Music Library.xml Location: C:\Documents and Settings\Brian\My
Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml

iTunes Music Folder: \\Maxtor_500\Brian\My Music\iTunes

These exact settings all worked fine with version SlimServer_v6.3.1.
And now that I have gone back to v6.3.1 they are all working again.

I don't know if this would officially be supported. iTunes integration is fairly delicate due to iTunes' special abilities to make the XML file contain erroneous information, and to place files in the wrong place fairly often, etc...

But when using an SMB share as your music folder for iTunes, SlimServer might not even be able to log in to the share. The fact that it worked with 6.3.1 honestly seems a bit miraculous for lack of a better word.

We may have some different handling for SlimServer (to run in userland rather than as a service) soon. I think the best thing to do would be to try it then--once slimtray has been updated to allow the server to run as your user. Then we could take a more serious look at this issue with 6.5... (Chances are it would disappear.)

Would that be an acceptable solution? I believe the newer SlimTray should be in the 6.5.1 release, and should also be in the 6.5.1 nightly builds if you'd like to give it a try now...

My mistake, the ability for SlimTray to run slim.exe as a user is not currently in 6.5.1. I'm not sure when it will be available -- sorry about that. I'll try to find out.

Thanks Kevin

When I put \\Maxtor_500\Brian\My Music\iTunes in the music libary box of the basic server settings page then 6.5.0 does find the music - does that make sense? If I do that I can play the music but my itunes playlists remain unpopulated.

OK--so the share is open and not requiring authentication, but like I said, iTunes integration can sometimes be frail due to iTunes itself causing problems here and there, and when you bring something foreign in to the mix like using SMB instead of a local disk, it becomes that much more delicate.

Does your iTunes XML file match with what you're putting in SlimServer in terms of the paths? (Could you attach it to the bug?)

Brian, were Ross and Kevin able to help you?
Comment 14 Kevin Pearsall 2006-10-03 15:17:02 UTC
I think the problem lies here:
<key>Music Folder</key>
<string>file://localhost/Z:/My%20Music/iTunes/</string>
<key>Library Persistent ID</key>

What you're telling SlimServer does not match what's in the XML file. But I think the best solution here in either case would be to wait for the new SlimTray.exe which will allow SlimServer to run in your user instance so you can read this Z: drive...
Comment 15 Chris Owens 2006-10-09 16:50:47 UTC
Well if we're going to wait for that solution, I'll mark this so it won't block the 6.5.1 release.
Comment 16 Dan Sully 2006-10-09 17:07:10 UTC
6.5.1 contains the new SlimTray.exe that can run SlimServer as an app.

So accessing Z:\ may work. Can't say for sure.
Comment 17 Ross Levine 2007-05-30 18:06:02 UTC
Brian, the new SlimTray has been apart of SlimServer for a while now, have you had a chance to test it?
Comment 18 Michael Herger 2007-11-19 03:09:56 UTC
This issue should be resolved with the new way of running SC7. Can anybody confirm?
Comment 19 Michael Herger 2007-12-21 04:34:16 UTC
Lack of negative feedback I consider this bug fixed. Please re-open as needed.
Comment 20 Chris Owens 2008-03-07 09:03:50 UTC
This bug is being closed since it was resolved for a version which is now released! Please download the new version of SqueezeCenter (formerly SlimServer) at http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html

If you are still seeing this bug, please re-open it and we will consider it for a future release.
